I think this question has overstepped its bounds....
here's the answer: THE PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM....I'll explain:
picture a gable roof and you're looking at the front of the home...
the square of the run (half the length of the span) PLUS the square of the distance between the plate and the ridge (the peak of the roof) EQUALS the square of the rafter line length (the hypotenuse of the right triangle).... add the two factors on one side of the equation.... and then take the square root of it.... that leaves the dimension of the rafter....

Let me be the first to say this is not something I'd ever involve myself in.

Barbara Todaro coming from engineering field, I can guess it has something to do with Pythagorean theorem.

I have Nick climb up there with a plank while I eyeball the angle and hold the other end of the tape.

The ancient Greek, Pythagoras, provided this equation a long time ago.

I think our roofer asked me that my 87 year old mother answered it.
She (blog from Sam) was a housewife and does not know computers. (Rafter calculator) is a quick way to find ans.

Wow, way over my head - I'll just hire a contractor and let them figure this one out

While I do recall this as being a simple formula, the combination of my simple mind and a hazy memory has once again left me, simply, without an answer.
But I'll be back to check the right answer and, as always, the clever but incorrect ones too.

Thanks for giving the answer. I was going to look it up in one of my construction books since I leave the framing to the framing experts.

I would be looking for the experts to tell me! I suppose if you know the angle of the roof you can figure it out by knowing the distance from the peak of the roof to the edge
