Why? Mr Musk has invented solar shingles to replace the panels.

Musk says Teslas solar shingles will cost less than a dumb roof.

When Solar City prices are right, and sufficient storage available. then I most certainly would go with passive power generation.

I like the snippet from video in the conversation with the neighbors, "Come over and check out this sweet roof."  You don't hear that very often.

We're seeing some problems in selling homes with solar panels on the roof.  Standing seperate, not so much.  I too, would like to see what happens with the Tesla shingles.

No... too many issues with "ownership" of panels when you sell the home. Not a big deal here or a draw. I've yet to have a client who asked for a home with solar panels.

No. They might make sense if someone were planning to stay in their home for 20-30 years to either pay off the long-term lease or recoup initial investment when purchasing. But even if we were planning to stay in our current home that long, I wouldn't put them on the roof - too many potential roof related issue. You'd have to move them when updating shingles. I'd get a separate group of panels near the house somewhere.

Probably not.  They are not attractive and homes with them seem to be harder to sell because of the non-curb appeal.

Solar would be a wonderful source of energy for the area I live in.  However, hydro power is so affordable (lowest in the nation), the cost of converting isn't attractive.

A friend of ours just did.  It took time and negotiating with the Department of Water and Power who of course still want to be paid for the power.  It is a complicated issue, but it will cost him a lot less to run the AC and keep his pool warm in the winter.

Only if your utility bill is high.  The leased panels in No CA is not cost prohibitive.  Many of our neighbors have it. Huge house several a/c systems. Want to turn heat up.

I would not.  The appraisers give them no value in my area and with technology changing so often, after 20 days they will look just as ugly as they did 20 years ago.

I haven’t thought about it to much. However, if I have enough money to install them I would definitely give them a try. I know that when you use solar energy, your monthly electricity bills go down. 

Besides, the cost of installing and maintaining solar energy panels is high in the beginning, but latter it could add your home a huge benefit.

In mose cases they are lease and when you try to sell your home, the lease goes with the home and some people may not get a loan then.

Anything done to the roof comes with risk. Then, they may help with the utilities but not eliminate them. Further, it requires ongoing maintenance. I have used solar twice to heat a pool and got my monies worth

Never...they are the ugliest thing I have ever seen. They are talking about making them look like roof shingles...then I may consider it,but remember:

1) If you lease or have a contract with the solar company, that must be considered in a sale. The buyer may not want to take it over.

2)I was told they do loose their efficiency over the years.

I would not install them on my home. They take up a lot of space on your roof & always seem to be on the front roof too... definitely detracts from the curb appeal of the house.
