Common sense isn't very common so I can no longer say to use it! By the time you get to use an app it might be too late. The best defense is to avoid any situations that might be a danger to begin with.

A time tested standby:
Never meet a stranger that calls you to see your listing or any listing for that matter. Ask them to send you their pre-approval letter. This tells you two things: 1. they are serious and not wasting your time and 2. their identity.
I'm amazed at how many agents rush over to a listing off a phone call from a stranger; especially a vacant property. It's a waste of time and it puts you at risk. I never show a home to someone I have not met first or checked out via their proof of funds (cash buyer) or pre-approval (loan buyer). If they resist, I politely let them know it's the only way I can show a property per my seller; to approved buyers only.

My office uses Find Friends. My family has it set up so we can always see where each other is, but my agents turn it on for the day when they are showing so I can watch over them a bit. Besides that we all take personal measures for ourselves as well.

I know I'm starting to sound preachy with this, but we are far greater dangers to ourselves with distracted driving. I've never even known a single agent in 35 years of selling real estate who has had an incident with a client or at an open house that put him or her in danger, but I do know many who have been injured in distracted driving accidents - or who have injured someone else. There is so much written here about Realtors being afraid of their clients to the point they won't allow them in the same car, which might actually be doing the client a favor.
Still, we all do need to use some basic common sense that apply in all of life's domains.

I think it's just important to use some common sense - don't meet someone at a property alone, but have them meet you at the office first and ask for identification.

If everyone just followed and was aware of the "basics" that would go a very long way towards keeping agents safe. And using common sense and trusting one's instincts are the most important "tools." All the apps in the world won't help if you don't exhibit common sense.

As a paid member of NAR, they wanted $15 from each agent to learn about issues with safety. My blog on safety was free done in 2015.
