Addison's 2010 Oktoberfest It's Oktoberfest time again in Addison!  The 2010 festivities (the 23rd Annual Oktoberfest Celebration in Addison) kick off on Thursday, September 16 and run through Sunday, September 19.  There's lots to do and see this year.   Thursday, September 16th: German spelling bee. Friday, September 17th: The official "tapping of the keg" is Friday at 7:00 p.m.  Addison Mayor Joe Chow will tap the first keg of Spaten from Germany, hopefully without spilling any bier.  Maxwell had a silver hammer, but the Mayor will use a wooden mallet to hammer the bronze spout into the keg.   It's Karaoke gone German! Dance Your Way to Fitness in Addison Texas. Zumba for Seniors is now offered at the Addison Athletic Club for Addison Pacesetter (those 50+ years young). What's Zumba?  Zumba is the 21st Century reincarnation of Jazzercize. This dance fitness program aims to improve balance, flexibility, tone, strength and cardiovascular health, working every major muscle group in the body. The basic dance steps can provide a workout, even for a sedentary population or the wheelchair bound. Vitruvian Park is the redevelopment project in Addison, Texas just northwest of LBJ & the Tollway.  Savoye, the first phase of the residential element of the Vitruvian Park project, is now about 50% occupied. The ground-breaking for Savoye II, the second phase (of six planned phases) at the 100 acre new urban neighborhood and master planned community, has occurred. You've heard of the "dog days of summer" but now the Town of Addison is putting a twist on the phrase. The outdoor pool at the Addison Athletic Club is scheduled to close (for humans) on Labor Day.  However, the annual doggy splash day will be held on Saturday morning, September 11th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. If you are an Addison resident with a membership card to the AAC (one-time $10 fee for as long as you live in town), come out and support the dogs! All participating dogs must have a 2009 or 2010 rabies tag or proof of vaccination. The fee is $5 per dog. Humans will not be allowed to swim.   09/02/2010

Coffeehouse on Beltline Road and learn about the Town of Addison.  This month, Diana George, the sales manager of Addison Visitor Services, spoke to us about the new visitor center, Addison's participation in the upcoming Superbowl festivities, and other special events in Addison.  Here are some interesting tidbits from her presentation. A BYOB homeowners association party in the Midway Meadows subdivision of Addison Texas turned into a BYOD (bring your own dog) party last evening.   Residents and guest of the Addison Timbers Homeowners Association (ATHOA), under the direction of Virginia Wallace, board member at large and social director, met at the fountain on Le Grande Drive for drinks and snacks. The Town of Addison is pet friendly. There are two dog parks, one at the end of Le Grande in the greenbelt park. And, it seems, the HOA is pet-friendly, too.The fountain provided a place for a cool dip in the water for more than one pooch. An Addison police officer  stopped by to check out the festivities. Frequent readers of my blog already know that each weekend there's a farmer's market in Addison Texas at the south east corner of Belt Line Road and the Dallas North Tollway. For the past 3 weeks, James Felps of In a Pickle has set up a tent and has been peddling his "splendiferously different" sweet-spicy pickles at the market. Karen, James' wife, has been making pickles for over 17 years.  She was looking for Christmas gift ideas and hit upon the pickle plan. She starts with her mom's recipe - cucumbers, chili peppers, sugar, natural spices, then adds other secret ingredients.  The pickles are made in small batches in Fort Worth, Texas and are sold at Farmers Markets in North Texas and on the couple's website. Heritage Tours will be conducting the Pacesetter's tour to Nachitoches, LA on  September 25-26, 2010. The focus of the tour: see, eat and drink. Nachitoches is where the movie Steel Magnolias was filmed. The city was founded in 1714 and is older than New Orleans. It is on the Cane River which is really a lake, not a river. Addison's Newest Star: Thai Star Restaurant. If you love Thai food, you're going to love the new Thai Star Restaurant in Addison, Texas. Owners Mark Earl Long and P'or Seekhor Long took over the old Best Thai location at the rear of the parking lot at 14833 Midway Road, Addison TX (south of Belt Line, north of Spring Valley). It's difficult to find if you've never been there before, but well worth the hunt to locate it (hint: turn into the driveway between Firefly Asain Grill and Ferrari's Italian and keep driving west). We started the evening with the Cream Cheese Crab Roll appetizer ($6.95). Each summer, Dallas area restaurants participate in a fund raiser for the North Texas Food Bank.  The establishments offer special three-course, fixed price dinners.  This year, several Addison restaurants are opening their doors to this event. Check out all participating restaurants in this year's KRLD Restaurant Week here. Dinners are $35.00 per person with $7.00 from each dinner benefiting the food bank.  Beverages, tax and gratuity are additional and reservations are required. Restaurant Week runs August 16 through August 22, and some restaurants extend their special menus into September.
