Celebrating Christmas in Arizona Retirement Communities   Each year Sun City Grand sponsors a holiday light show contest. Visitors from throughout the valley meander through the community to observe the voluminous light displays with a diversity in decorations. While showing property yesterday in Sun City Grand, I encountered some uniquely different Christmas decorations, most perfectly discerned during the daylight hours. Hydrants were decorated. You can find all kinds of decorations on palm trees, cactus, fruit trees, bushes and evey other kind of desert plant in Sun City Grand throughout the holidays. Go through the Sun Cities and see stocking caps decorating the cactus I just love that look. I learned a few years ago that I do not need snow and a white christmas to enjoy the holidays. Sun City Grand the green green grass of home     So how in the world can the grass be this green lush and beautiful in the middle of December? Well it takes a lot of hard work on the part of the community golf course maintenance staff led by Jeff Hochman. In late September as the nights start to get cooler the bermuda grass begins to go dormant and quit growing. At this time the staff starts shutting down one course at a time and overseeding. The overseed is done with a rye grass mixture and the bermuda goesdormant and the rye grass takes over. In the first week the grass is brown and then the rye starts coming in so within a couple of weeks the course is ready and as the weeks go on the golf course is transformed from brown to this magnificent green carpet of grass.
