Fred, from the vantage point of stylish and trending furniture, I think distressed furnishings and cabinetry are making an exit if it already hasn't, although I've always liked that style.  It works particularly well in a country or farm-style home.

 

Most important is her taste in decor.    Whatever is born from the heart's desire works.

I guess it's a "look." Depends on your taste... not quite mine unless there is a specific piece of furniture that blends in with everything else. To my taste your friend sounds like it might be too much of a good thing.

Those were hot 20 years ago.  Like Elvis, that style has left the building when it comes to resale.  That's a very personal style and if it floats their boat, all the more power to them.  It's not something I'd put into my house or a flip.  Clean and modern is what sells.

If your in a historic or older farm house style property the distress look fits well, otherwise it may look a little out of place with today's trends. The distress look sells well in our area .

If she is updating with selling in mind, I would try to guide her in a different direction as that style has run its course. If it is for her own personal residence and it makes her happy, then she should go for it.

I would not favor such a design but I am not the one making the decision for your friend. If it is what makes her happy and she has looked at other options and settled on "distressed", it is her choice, her house and she will enjoy it.

Many years ago, I was asked to come into a home that had incredibly beautiful cabinets and help a decorative painter distress the kitchen cabinets.  I thought they were crazy.  I was astonished how beautiful the cabinets were when the project was completed.  Like many things, it depends on the artist doing the work.  The artist I helped was exceptionally talented.

All those years fixing distressed, worn out old surfaces as a painting contractor, just to find out that it was a thing  😂

Would not be my choice but it was a hit about 20 years ago give or take a few years.   And....if that makes them happy.....Go For It!  Who cares what others think when it comes to your own home.

It's ok here and there on some items and in some rooms, but I think that look is overused now and has run it's course. Personally, I'm sick of seeing it. I can see it in old farm houses and log homes, but don't over do it.

Great for a Beer Tavern or a Log Cabin, but everywhere else, it's a long passed trend in SoCal. That's a very "period in time" look that's past it's prime. That said, if she's going to live there 20 more years...go for it!

It's a personal choice. I think it's fine for pieces of furniture, not sure about built in cabinetry as it might have an impact on resale.

Too specific to a person's taste will hinder the exit strategy when selling. I say no to cabinets, baseboards and vanities. If she loves the distressed look, buy furniture and accents instead.

I love antiques and vintage but I don't want 'distressed' ANYTHING . . . I'm not a 'shabby chic' type where homes are concerned. Homes won't generate additional money with that style. Modern and slick is what works. IF she wants this for her enjoyment, far out. But she will need to upgrade again if she goes to sell.

Why live with something you don't like just to please future buyers?

I think it would be pretty easy to paint the cabinets to get rid of the distressed look when it's time to sell.
