Watermarks are all over the internet. A large number of millennials will be familiar with them.

I know you can watermark a photo to keep others from using it
I watermark all my listing photos to prevent scammers from stealing them and creating false craigslist ads. Works great!
For the uniformed, it could be about a mother yelling at a child about a spill that wont come out...as in this will leave a watermark (stain)

If I understand your question a water mark is something you put on a document to label without obscuring it completely like DRAFT or SAMPLE etc

It's a way of securing documents. They're all over checks.
Just check the photos in mls listings. Usually they are watermarked.

It is the NECESSARY addition one must make when they know their stuff is going to be stolen.
Agents should watermark the listing images so that when the MLS, the franchise and NAR sell agent IP to zillow, the agent will be seen as the originator. But, since none of those I identify are concerned regarding the agent, they impose prohibitions to such watermarking..
