As we experience record low temperatures here in the Nyack’s with it’s Victorian homes as a Nyack Realtor I always tell my clients to do the following to winterize their homes. Change the furnace filters. Run the ceiling fans in reverse which will force the warm air down. Winterize the water lines and heating pipes (good idea to check with your plumber here). Turn down the temperature on the water heater. Search out the drafts around windows and doors and insultate It goes without saying you should install storm doors and windows. Give the furnace an annual check up. Smart to do before we hit cold weather. It really pays to get a programmable thermostat so you can lower temperature when not home and at night while sleeping. Consider upgrading to new energy efficient furnace. Call Orange...

http://www.nancybweber.com/2016/02/04/chirping-smoke-alarm-in-nyack/ This winter we wanted to save money on our heating bill. My husband bought all new Honeywell Programmable thermostats. We set the thermostats to go down to 64 degrees.at 10:00PM.About a week ago around 2:00AM we were awakened tb an obnoxious chirping. We knew it was a smoke alarm. Thus began a week long odyssey to stop the chirping that would start anywhere from 1:00AM to 3:30AM. First we changed the batteries on the second floor smoke alarms where we recently built an addition assuming the batteries were the problem. Well the next night the chirping began again taunting us. After a terrible nights sleep we called Kidde customer service for help. They asked if the batteries were old,.They asked about the expiration dat...

It is the Christmas New Year break and the kids are home, and we as parents try and figure out what activities are fun to do together. Well I was on Facebook and noticed a post that told me our Nyack Library had free passes to the Museum of Natural History. I went over to the library and lo and behold this Facebook post was accurate. I was hoping for four passes, but their policy is two passes per family.which makes sense. Hey,when you are headed to the city with family everything helps to keep costs down. We saw a wonderful exhibition at the Museum of Natural History called The Secret World Inside You. The show is all about bacteria, and how it affects our bodies -really cool stuff. My oldest daughter wants to return this coming weekend. If you are looking for activities the family ca...

If you are like me when you approach the recycling bins you aren’t sure what goes where. There are so many recycling myths and misunderstandings floating around. If you are trying to do it correctly you will need to inquire at different sources. The most important point is that recycling is decided on a community by community basis – so the list of items that can be put into recycling bins differs widely from community to community. I had a working theory about plastic bags and plastic wrap. My thought was that that they were made from a petroleum product therefore they go into the plastic recycling bin. Wrong! While a few curbside programs accept plastic bags, wraps and film, most don’t. Why? Most recycling facilities are set up to handle predominately rigid (hard) materials that are ea...

There is a relatively new business in town. It is called D.S.Z. Barbers. At this moment I am not sure what the the letters stand for, but ask when you drop in for a really pampered haircut and shave. The proprietors actually refer to their shop as a man cave. My husband stopped n based on the recommendation of a friend , and he hasn’t looked back. It is better to make an appointment so that you will be taken right away. You are served Expresso before your haircut and as in all barbershops the conversation is always animated. I suggest stopping by and checking the place out. My husband thinks it’s great. For more info go their website.www.dszbarberinc.com

Weather permitting Nyack is the place to be  to see dueling fireworks displays fill the sky over the Hudson River. The Village of Nyack will launch their aerial show from the west bank at about the same time Sleepy Hollow will light up the skies from the east side of the river, shortly before 9PM. The Nyack fireworks, which will be launched from Memorial Park can be seen from any place in the village where there is a clear view of the southeast sky.If you are going to watch from the park get there early to find a parking space in the area. I would suggest bringing a  blanket and folding chairs to make the viewing a more comfortable experience. If we are rained out the celebration will take place tomorrow July 5 at same time.                                                              ...

For a truly amusing evening come to the Nyack Library to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of V.E. Day. Co-authors Elizabeth Sayles and Rick Beyer will be there for a lively discussion of their new book about this very theatrical U.S. Army unit. It is the true story of an incredible group of artists, including Ellsworth Kelly and Bill Blass, who were sent to Europe during WWII with inflatable rubber tanks, sound effects and art supplies. Their mission was to fool the Germans as to the location of fully armed US. Army battalions. Some of the original art created by the soldiers will be on view, along with a slide presentation by the authors. Book signing will follow the discussion. Click link below to reserve. http://nyacklibrary.evanced.info/signup/EventDetails.aspx?EventId=13552&lib=0

As we endure one of the coldest winters in recent memory it is important to take steps to prevent your pipes from freezing. I just went through the experience, and it is not pretty. We woke up about a week ago with very little water pressure . Having lived in an old house for over 20 years I immediately knew that somewhere in the house was at least one frozen pipe, possibly more than one. We eventually found the pipe , and unfortunately it had ruptured from the expansion of the frozen water. When it thawed  water just poured out of the hole in the pipe and ended up in our basement. Our pipe froze even though it was wrapped and insulated  because it was too close to the outside wall. Our plumber suggested moving the pipe further inside which we are going to do when we can get him bac...

There is a lot of activity in Nyack’s future , so it is a good thing that.the village has received a $200,000 grant to update its master plan. This seems like a good idea in light of the following future projects that face the village .   In Nyack, the near-future holds the prospect for a lot of new residential development. While commercial development in Nyack has been limited, the village is currently witnessing the development of one of the biggest commercial projects in years - the new NYLO Nyack hotel being built at the site of an former factory at the top of High Avenue at Polhemus Street adjacent to the northbound ramps of the Thruway's Exit 11 interchange.   New apartments opened this year on Main Street just east of Midland Avenue, with developers looking to build more resident...

One of my favorite Nyack traditions occurs this weekend . This Saturday 12/6 we are  ushering in the holidays with seasonal music, hot chocolate and special holiday readings from 4-6pm at Veterans Park Gazebo on Main at Cedar Street at the Nyack Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Tree Lighting celebration.  There will be music from the Bossy Frog Band, the Nyack High School Choir, the Lower Hudson Valley Youth Chorus and Nyack’s own Marla Pasquale. Actor Dave Blau, manager of  the JohnnyCakes restaurant, will share a special holiday reading. I also hear that Santa will be paying us  a visit escorted by the Highland Hose Company of the Nyack Fire District. II.There will be free holiday cheer for kids of all ages, hot chocolate from the Chocolaterie, and hot cider from Mostly Myrtle’s from the ...

We have been thinking about adding a proper master bedroom and enlarging our kitchen for a few years now, and recently decided to take the plunge. We called in about 3 contractors to get estimates. The estimates were all very close to each other, but were much more than we wanted to spend. We made the decision to be the general contractor for the job. We would oversee the framing, electrical, plumbing, and purchasing of the supplies. This is definitely not for the fainthearted, but can save you lots of money. This blog is not really about our experiences so far as General Contractors, but more about praising our local supplier Nyack Lumber. When we first decided to price materials for the job we decided to give the materials list to Nyack Lumber, Lowes, and Home Depot.  As I am in real e...

It’s that time of the year again where parents with young children have to figure out what their kids are doing this summer. Thankfully for parents in Rockland County there are many choices in all price ranges. Depending on the age of your kids the first decision would be day camp versus sleep away camp. Sleep away is charged with emotion on both parent and children’s part. Kids are usually pretty excited to go on a summer adventure, and parent who are considering sleep away for the first time are full of worry. Before choosing a camp try and get recommendations from friends and relatives. Here in Nyack we have some intriguing camps such as the Amazing Grace Circus where kids learn juggling, acrobatics, trapeze, tight wire, and clowning. We also have Chefs 2 Be which offers “All Day Coo...

Nyack Boat Club’s three hundred foot pier with docks and hook ups for power and water. Out my window, just beyond the snow-capped trees, is the picturesque Hudson Riverwith a thick blanket of clouds covering the icy gray water. On days like this, my mind can’t help but wander to thoughts of warm sunshine and sailing. Visions of billowy sails and the sound of water rushing past the hull warm my soul. I can hear the halyards ringing against masts, providing the perfect music to Friday night dinners with friends and family on the patio. What better place to enjoy the river than the Nyack Boat Club? Just what is the Nyack Boat Club? The Nyack Boat Club (NBC) was established in 1909 by a group of boating enthusiasts to support and promote recreational sailing and boating on the majestic Hud...

Hopefully we will not lose power here in Rockland County, but in case we do and you are going to use a generator please remember the following points . Before installing a generator, be sure to properly disconnect from your utility electrical service.  Have your generator installed by a licensed electrician. Operate generators outside, away from house.  Never run a generator indoors.  Carbon monoxide gas from the generator’s exhaust can spread throughout enclosed spaces. Fuel spilled on a hot generator can cause an explosion.  If your generator has a detachable fuel tank remove it before refilling.  If this is not possible, shut off the generator and let it cool before refilling. Do not exceed the rated capacity of your generator.  Most small, home-use portable generators produce 350 to...

Great news the Nyack Farmer's Market will now be here in Nyack on both Thursdays and Saturdays starting this summer. This is a no brainer. People who work 9-5 were not able to shop on Thursdays as the market closed at 2. The Nyack village board sensitive to local business needs questioned shop owners before approving the Saturday Farmer’s Market and found overwhelming support for the idea.  Kudos to the Nyack Chamber of Commerce, Nyack Village Board, and the Nyack Farmer’s market for implementing such a great idea.

2014 New Year’s Eve Fireworks in Nyack are the place to ring in the New Year.  If you looking for a wonderful place to celebrate the New Year I would suggest Nyack’s Memorial Park as the place to be. The Village of Nyack will partner with Piermont and Haverstraw to celebrate the New Year with fireworks at exactly midnight along the Hudson River. Mayors Jen Laird White of Nyack, Chris Sanders of Piermont and Michael  Kohut of Haverstraw joined forces with the Office Rockland County Tourism and Local Development to coordinate the New Year’s Eve celebrations. You can view the fireworks from Flywheel Park in Piermont, Memorial Park in Nyack and Emeline and Bowline Parks in the Village of Haverstraw. The fireworks displays are to free and open to the public. Happy New Year and enjoy the New ...
