Since my recent post about the Oldest House in Silver Spring an EVEN OLDER ONE has come on the market for sale. It's the original Kinsman Farmhouse out Colesville Road between 4 corners and Burnt Mills.  It dates back to 1783!, and I thought 1833 was OLD!! It's on almost an acre hidden from the Road in the midst of  newer houses and townhouses.   You won't believe the restoration that's been done on this 7 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, 2 Fireplace Historic House or the fact that it is OVER 200 years old and is in the 4 Corners/Northwood Park area of Silver Spring.

Leisure World of Maryland - Arbor Day (April 27 2007) This year on Arbor Day (April 27), the Garden and Environmental Cub will be sponsoring the planning for a series of Crimson King Norway maples.  The choice of  the Crimson King Norway for this years planting was made after a search of the Leisure World grounds had determined that it was not yet part of the community landscape.. Care has been taken to select a Four acre site. A Crimson King Norway maple has a large dark ret-purplish five-pointed lead a year long.  The Garden and Environmental is one of the over 70 clubs/groups in the active adult senior community of Leisure World.   The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902), a Nebraska journalist and polit...

This email was on my neighborhood's List Serve, I am personally for it, How about you?. . . . . . . . .  .  . . . .  This was on Silver Spring Moms - I thought I'd pass it onto others: Though I'm not usually one for big chains, given the loss of Storehouse and IA ETC, this might be a good addition to our neighborhood- and help anchor even more stores. If you're so inclined......... Fri Apr 6, 2007 7:08 am (PST) Once again, I need your help. I'm trying to help with an e-mail campaign to bring Crate & Barrel to Silver Spring. Rumor has it they they are considering it. We've managed to find the e-mail address for the real estate consultant they are using, and we're asking that you 1) send some version of the message below to him and 2) that you circulate this or some other message that you...

The 1970's and 80's Tennis Star Harold Solomon grew up in this big custom-built split level home in the Springbrook Estates Subdivision of Silver Spring.  The house was built in 1958 and has 7 Bedrooms and 4 Full Baths, an inground swimming pool and (of course) a Tennis Court. The house is located within one block of the former home of Lefty Driesell.  Harold Solomon graduated from Springbrook High School in 1970 and became known with fellow tennis star Eddie Dibbs as one of the "BAGEL TWINS".  Solomon's parents sold the home in 1977 and moved to Florida. Harold Solomon runs the Harold Solomon Institue of Tennis and is featured in the book "Great Jews in Sports"

Built in 1968, this big contemporary split level was the private home of Charles "Lefty" Driesell until it was sold by him in 1988. This unique custom built home is on a short, no-thru street in the subdivision known as Valleybrook. The home is set on a densely wooded 1/2 acre within walking distance to Springbrook High School. The bright main level of the house has vaulted ceilings and extra windows everywhere. The home has 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths on the upper level; plus an extra bedroom and full bathroom in the lower level.  The backyard is level and private, it has (of course) a half court basketball court with lighting! and steps to a path that leads all the way to Wheaton Regional Park.  My favorite all time quote from Lefty . . .  . .  The Harder you work, the Luckier you get"...

This old farmhouse sits at the highest point on a hill overlooking Colesville Road from the top of Greyrock Road and Harvey Roads in The Woodside Park Neighborhood of Silver Spring.  Built in 1833, it is by far the oldest house I have ever encountered in Silver Spring. Surrounded now by homes built in the 1940's on Harvey Road and Greyrock Road, it looks to me like before  these homes were built around it, it must have looked out on Colesville Road and down at Mrs K'sTollhouse with lots of acreage around and probably had a Colesville Road address. The address now is Greyrock Road, Silver Spring, the street address is at the back of the 3/4 acre property.  The front of the property (front of the house with the porch) is at the end of Harvey Road facing ColesvilleI was surprised to find ...

Goldie Hawn the famous actress and comedian grew up in this quaint and charming circa 1927 Brick Duplex in Takoma Park, Md 20912.  The Hawn Family lived in the Left Side of this duplex.  Goldie's small wedding to John Hudson was in the backyard of this home.  Goldies father Edward Hawn, a musician, died in 1982 and Goldie's mother Laura lived in this home up until 1984, when she sold the house and moved to California, where she died in 1994.  Goldie graduated from the old Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md in 1963 and attended American University in Washington DC. Although she grew up in Takoma Park, her "stomping ground" was Downtown Silver Spring in it's heyday.  She speaks of her fond memories in the Documentary Film "Silver Spring, Story of an American Suburb"

Romance Novelist Nora Roberts aka J.D. Robb grew up in this adorable bungalow off of Sligo Avenue near the heart of Downtown Silver Spring.  This area used to be known as "Takoma Park" and is now known as North Takoma Park with a Silver Spring Address.  Nora Roberts' real name is Eleanor M Robertson and her 85+ year old mother still owns this house.  She grew up the youngest and "an only girl", with a slew of brothers, who still live in the area.    Nora went to Parochial School, probably Saint Michaels Elementary, and then for High School she attended The Academy of the Holy Names  When she transferred to public school, the Old Blair High School, she met her first husband.  For many years, the family ran a very successful business, R&R Lighting on Silver Spring Avenue that her parents ...

The Montgomery County Revenue Authority has proposed changes to the Sligo Creek Golf Course.  They want to add a lighted tiered driving range and a minature golf course ( but not a "tacky" or  "carnival" type course) The neighboring community is NOT Happy about the changes and has rejected the planned changes. Read the Washington Post Article from last week.  A noted Silver Spring Blogger and long time resident of Silver Spring has a different view about the minature golf course, read his article HERE.If you want to have some input in what happens in and to our parks - Show up at this forum and comment or give written testimony.  I know I will be there lobbying for my pet project, the much needed off-leash DOG PARK in Silver Spring! Notice anything different when you travel north on New Hampshire from Takoma Park?  The next time you are there (between Hillandale Shopping Center and Lockwood Drive), look right and you will see where FDA is consolidating it's headquarters.  With the front entrance on New Hampshire Avenue and the back entrance on Cherry Hill Road, it is expected that there will be roughly 7,700 employees at this location.  Several phases of the project have been completed with Engineering and Physics Laboratory currently underway (scheduled to be completed in 2007).  Click here to see pictures of the completed buildings.
