Simeon Magruder Levy was born in Pennsylvania back in 1774 to Andrew and Susanna.  The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1799.  In 1793, he enlisted in the United States Army as a sergeant and distinguished himself at the Battle of Maumee Rapids in 1794.  For his actions his Captain Benjamin Lockwood recommended Levy as a cadet in the newly founded United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.Levy entered the academy in 1801, there was only one other cadet in the class and he came in second upon graduation.  Levy served as an instructor at West Point then as an engineer at Fort James Jackson and Fort Wilkinson, Georgia.  He fell ill in 1805 and resigned his commission, he died two year later.What you may not know about Levy is that he was the first Jewish graduate for the... 05/30/2021

Frederick Libby was born in Sterling, Colorado back in 1891.  Not much is known about his early childhood, but he was roping pronghorn at the age of ten.  In 1904, he moved to the Indian Territory to work as a horse broker.  In 1910, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona working as a cowboy. He was living in Canada when WWI started working as a chauffeur.  He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1915, assigned to the motor transport division for the Canadian Expeditionary Force.  he served in France before he volunteered to join the Royal Flying Corps, becoming an observer with the 23rd Squadron.  On his first day of training it was machine gun practice in the morning, and flight status that afternoon.  On his very first combat mission which was on his birthday he scored his first victory.  Back the... 05/29/2021

Lanoe George Hawker was born in Hampshire, England back in 1890 to Henry and Julia.  He was sent to the Stubbington House School at eleven and to the Royal Nave College in Dartmouth.  From there he entered the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich joining the Royal Engineers as an officer cadet.  He developed a keen interest in flying and was awarded Aviator’s Certificate No. 435 by the Royal Aero Club.  He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1913 being posted the Cork Harbor with the 33rd Fortress Company, three days before Britain entered into World War I.In 1914, he was in France as a captain with No. 6 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.  In 1915, while flying a reconnaissance mission he was wounded by ground fire.  He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for attaching a German zeppelin... 04/07/2021

Heinrich Kubis was born in Germany back in 1888.  He was a professional waiter working at several luxury hotels in Europe. Maybe you’ve heard of them the Hotel Ritz in Paris and the Carlton Hotel in London.  In 1912, he began attending to passengers on the LZ 10 Schwaben during flights from Berlin to Freidrichshafen. The plane crashed in June of 1912, but he survived.  He was on the Hindenburg at the time of its destruction in New Jersey in 1937.  He was in the dining room at the moment of the explosion, helping passengers to escape.  He also escaped without injury, he died in 1979, he was 98.What you may not know about Heinrich is that he was the world’s first flight attendant.  He preceded the debut of the first female flight attendant Ellen Church, by eighteen years.  I wrote about h... 03/20/2021

Ellen Church was born in Cresco, Iowa back in 1904.  She graduated from Cresco High School.  After graduation she addended the University of Minnesota graduating with a degree in nursing.  After graduation, she worked at a San Francisco hospital.  Not only was she a registered nurse, she also was a licensed pilot.  She was hired by Boeing Air Transport in 1930.  She was expected to attend to the passengers, help with hauling luggage, fueling and assisting pilots to push the aircraft into hangars.  At the time her salary was very good at $125.00 a month.  She was involved in an automobile accident that ended her career just 18 months into it.  During WWII she served in the Army Nurse Corps as a captain and flight nurse.  A horse-riding accident ended her life in 1965, she was 60.What you... 03/19/2021

William Bennet Kouwenhoven was born in Brooklyn, New York back in 1886.  I don’t have any data about his childhood, however the attended the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn where he received his BA in electrical engineering.  In 1907, he received his MS in mechanical engineering.  In 1910, he moved to Germany to study at the Karlsruhe Technische Hochschule earing his doctorate in engineering in 1913.In 1914, he was hired as a professor at Johns Hopkins, by 1919 he was an associate professor, being promoted to full professor in 1930.  In 1938, he was promoted to Dean of Johns Hopkins University’s School of Engineering retiring in 1954.  He was awarded the Edison Medal and the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award.  He died in 1975, he was 89.What you may not know about William ... 03/13/2021

Ancel Benjamin Keys was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado back in 1904 to Benjamin and Carolyn.  In 1906, the family moved to San Francisco, then to Berkeley.  He left school taking odd jobs, one was shoveling bat guano in Arizona and a powder monkey in a Colorado mine.  He eventually finished his secondary education and was admitted to the University of California, Berkeley in 1922.He graduated with a B.A. in economics and political science in 1925, and a M.S. in zoology in 1928.  In 1930, he received his Ph.D. in oceanography and biology.  After graduation he taught at Harvard University, in 1936, he earned a second Ph.D. in physiology.  He studied fish to estimate the weight of fish from their length. James J. Kenney was born in in San Francisco, California back in 1869 to James and Nellie. In 1871, the family moved to East Bay.  After the death of his father he was taken in by an aunt Sarah.  She died in 1882, when another aunt Elizabeth, he lived with her and two of her brothers in a small, kit-built cottage on Addison Street.He joined the local volunteer fire company.  He was elected chief of the association of Berkeley volunteer fire companies. In 1916, he drove to a fire at the El Dorado Oil Works.  A few blocks from the fire he hit a telephone pole, disabling the vehicle.  He ran the rest of the way on foot.  After being forced to retreat from the hat and smoke he collapsed on the sidewalk.  He was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, he never recovered.What you may not know about Jam... 01/30/2021
