Simeon Magruder Levy was born in Pennsylvania back in 1774 to Andrew and Susanna. The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1799. In 1793, he enlisted in the United States Army as a sergeant and distinguished himself at the Battle of Maumee Rapids in 1794. For his actions his Captain Benjamin Lockwood recommended Levy as a cadet in the newly founded United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.Levy entered the academy in 1801, there was only one other cadet in the class and he came in second upon graduation. Levy served as an instructor at West Point then as an engineer at Fort James Jackson and Fort Wilkinson, Georgia.
