This Memorial Day: We are Honoring the Fallen Soldiers. May I say, we should do this all year around, not just today or should I say once a year. These were our true Heroes, they never made it home to enjoy our Freedom.“This is the day we pay homage to all those who didn't come home. This is not Veterans Day, it's not a celebration, it is a day of solemn contemplation over the cost of freedom." –Tamra Bolton I have been saying this message for decades. Some listened and learned, others did not. I still get emails with the headline: Happy Memorial Day. I also get greeted with the same message. I just politely smile, and it tells me something about that person. If it is an email, I just shake my head and mumble a few choice words. "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather...

Dealing with the IRS can be intimidating and a real pain. However, avoiding the common mistakes can reduce your financial risks and heartburn. Here are some pitfalls to watch out for and tips on handling them effectively.1. Ignoring IRS NoticesThis is by far the biggest mistake you can make. Nobody likes to be ignored. This is particularly true of large government organizations that feel they are what keeps the Country going. IRS notices are not going to disappear if left unattended. Ignoring them can lead to more severe consequences, such as additional penalties, interest, or even enforcement actions like wage garnishments or bank levies. Dealing with the problem by reading and responding to IRS communications is always the best way.2. Procrastinating on Filing and PaymentsDelaying you...

🇺🇸 Honoring The Fallen on Memorial Day 🇺🇸 Memorial Day dates back to the Civil War. Because of the heavy losses, it acted as a way to honor service people who died serving in the U.S. military. It was originally called Decoration Day. In 1868. Major General John A. Logan, leader of the Grand Army of the Republic (a group of Union veterans), declared May 30th a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Many cities and towns already had similar traditions. Logan's proclamation helped unify them into a national day of remembrance.  On May 30th. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act made Memorial Day a federal holiday on the last Monday of May. So, Memorial Day started as a way to remember those lost in the Civil War and transformed into a day to honor all who are lost w...

A 2024 Memorial Day Story That Brings Closure to a FamilyI was going to post a blog this morning consistent with the thoughts of all on Memorial Day, to remember to honor those that gave their lives for freedom. As I do normally, I was having a cup of coffee to get the mind started and wanted to glance at the paper as well.Reading online has its advantages, and it also offered the title to an article that needed to be read. This is the story of Kenneth McKeeman, the service man on the left on the left in the photo, who lived in Waterbury, until the death f his parents and at 13 years old, moved to Brooklyn to live with his older brother. He enlisted in the Air Force and was part of a bomber crew that was shot down after a bomb run over the coast of France. The Germans gathered the remain...

Although the tradition remains, we call it Memorial Day to commemorate all who lost their lives while in military services. In 1971, the day of remembrance was changed to Memorial Day and became an official federal holiday. Let us remember those who died in military actions that led to deaths.

Memorial Day Weekend 2024, the Start of Summer in the Northwoods, and More. Well it’s the eve of that weekend that many people up here wait for all spring, Memorial Day. The roads are packed with happy tourists Northwoods bound, with trucks, campers, ATV’s and all the toys of summer. A few foresters at WMS are going to be busy this weekend too, visiting with clients who are making this exodus to the north to visit cabins that they don’t see too often. It is a joyous weekend for many as they celebrate the end of snow and though the lakes are still a little too cold to swim in, they are nice to look at, paddle a canoe in, and maybe even catch a few fish in. Today people in our area are getting ready to plant corn in the garden, I am a little apprehensive about planting this early since w...

Memorial Day…Have You Earned It? Have you been reading the wonderful posts written about Memorial Day? Dorie Dillard…Mike McCann…Sham Reddy…Doug Dawes just to name a few.  Thankfully, Memorial Day Day is remembered for more than a day off, the opening of pools, and cookouts.  At the end of Saving Private Ryan, as I was leaving the theatre, I sat down and cried. I have never done that for any movie.   The thought of this schoolteacher (Capt. Miller)  and the sacrifices he and his fellow soldiers made for one Private. Ryan was amazing. It is what service and honor are about.    The message…two words…should resonate with all of us who owe what we have…the freedoms we enjoy…to those who paid the ultimate price.  Earn this. Let’s strive to live our lives in a manner that honors those who gav...

You may know him as a celebrity, actor, songwriter, singer, but the face in the photo is Captain Kris Kristofferson. The song he wrote "For the Good Times," became a #1 hit for Ray Price. Kris Kristofferson joined the Army in 1960. He graduated from West Point and became a helicopter pilot serving in Viet Nam, following in the steps of his father, a Military Officer. He was born in Brownville, TX. I went to Brownville the year I moved to TX in 1997 for an Outdoor Women's Retreat teaching me survival skills. It was a very desolate place at the time I was there. Kris Kristofferson led an extraordinary life. There is a great article about him on www.alphahistory.com/vietnamwar/kriskristofferson-vietnam blues-1966. My favorite line of Kristofferson is I said It's a shame that every man who ...
