  Silent Saturday - Life Goes On   The Husum, WA wildfire continues to burn today (see my original blog: http://activerain.com/blogsview/3435427/thankful-thursday-thanks-firefighters-battling-the-husum-wa-wildfire). The fire has only spread to an additional 200 acres, making it 1700 acres, is being fought by 400+ firefighters and is considered to be 40% contained. High winds are expected tonight into tomorrow morning, raising concerns about the fire. This photo is of our son, Sam's, football practice last night, the players ignoring the smoke rising behind them, carrying on with business as usual. Life does go on.   09/08/2012

  Thankful Thursday: Thanks Firefighters Battling the Husum, WA Wildfire   Four wildfires started along Highway 141 in the Columbia River Gorge, just west of White Salmon, Washington on Wednesday afternnoon. By today, over 1500 acres have burned, 40 homes have been evacuated with over 400 put on alert to possibly evacuate soon. Over 250 firefighters are currently battling the blaze, with reinforcements being brought in to assist. High winds were expected today, along with 90+ degree temperatures. Add the fact that the region has received no measurable rain since July 20th, and it wasn't looking good. But today's winds never rose and the fire, although not considered to be contained, spread very little. Fire commanders predict the fire will be contained in the next day or two. While I'm killing time waiting for May so I can start the next round of market reports, I found this little gem while I was browsing around on BoingBoing. Maryhill, in Goldendale, Washington, has become the site for a variety of gravity driven sports like downhill skateboarding and street luge. This footage is from the Maryhill Freeride event, which apparently doesn't have a lot of rules and allows multiple riders. This is an impressive ride by a couple of very gutsy women - the only thing that gives me pause is the lack of protective covering - I've had my share of road rash from cycling, and it ain't any fun.   Friday's Foto - Majestic Mt. Adams   This is a gorgeous shot of Mt. Adams in southwestern Washington, taken from Mt. Hood, Oregon. The photo was taken by a friend of Mel's, the talented Julio Viamonte, who graciously agreed to let us publish his incredible capture. Mt. Adams is part of the "Cascade Volcanic Arc" (which includes Mt. Saint Helens and Mt. Hood), a string of volcanos in the Pacific Northwest. Although Mt. Adams has not erupted in 1,400 years, it is not an extinct volcano and could erupt again one day.       04/13/2012

A Shahaptian tribe whose former seat was at the headwaters of the Cowlitz, Lewis, White Salmon, and Klickitat rivers, north of Columbia river, in Klickitat and Skamania Counties, Wash.
