Washougal and Camas have wonderful local cuisines!  Shelbys Grille has a new look and a new menu!  Pulled Pork, Brisket, Barbecue Chicken....I know you will love it too.  This is a fish caught by my awesome nephew Jamie. We call Jamie the "Fish Whispherer."   He can catch fish when no one else can! He just offered to bring us some Salmon tonight that he caught yesterday!  He sent us a picture from his phone...he had cleaned the fish and had it all fileted out.  Our favorite quick Salmon recipe: filet the fish, lay it on aluminum foil on a cookie baking sheet, put on a layer of mayonaise about 1/4 inch thick. Then cover the mayonaise with some brown sugar, then slice some lemons and place on top. Bake at 350 degrees for about 12-15 minutes. Fish will be flaky and the mayonaise and brown sugar will have disappeared as it soaks down through the fish to flavor it! As in this 2015 pretty dry season, the Washougal River is mighty low.    It was a gorgeous morning at our new little cabin on the Washougal River. There was a light mist layered across the water.  I had taken a cup of coffee down to sit on the rocks on the side of the river to watch the salmon running upstream to spawn. It was a glorious sight to see the salmon truly r-u-s-h-i-n-g through the rock rapids to try to push themselves past the shallow parts of the river. In doing this, they put up a six foot high spray as they muscled their way through the rushing rapids. Then my husband came out on the deck and yelled, "Jill! Come in! Something has happened!" That was when we both sat down on the couch and stared at the events unfolding on the news channels about the airplanes hitting the Twin Towers. Ya Never Know What You Will See on The Washougal River  Rd.! (Washougal River Nieghborhood, 98671)  I travel this Washougal River Rd. every day. This hand made sign was posted near the Five Mile Mark area. I do not know who posted it. I'm not even sure of the deepest intents or why this person posted it. I do know it is a Bible verse from Mark 8:36, so I can appreciate that.  What do you think it means?         This display seems to be a tribute or a memorial to someone that is missed. There are actually four of these displays along the Washougal River Rd. One of the displays has two little flags by it. I have not seen anything in the newspapers that describe these stuffed animal displays. Washougal River Seems To Be Lower Water Level This June 2015 With less snowpack and rain, the Washougal River water level seems lower than usual. There is less water "traffic" coming by on the river. We live here on the Washougal River. Kayaks, Inner Tubes and Salmon all enjoy our river area.  Kayaks:It is usually a fun and welcome sight to see Kayak-ers coming barreling down past our back deck in the rapids in the spring and early summer. There is a "cove" near our house and sometimes the paddlers on kayaks will "hold up" there while others on kayaks would "try the rapids" near there. The water through the cove is slower so they can paddle back up the river a bit through the cove and try various tricks and tumbles with their kayaks. We have seen very few kayaks since June began. We visited this cute Echo Doughnut Lounge today located right off "Love St." and "Main St." in Washougal WA.  (1801 Main St.) The Echo Doughnut Lounge has much more than just doughnuts!! It also has an eccentric and fun music oriented area with cafe tables  so you can sit and enjoy the open mic entertainers. We were fortunate enough to get to hear a young woman named Malea playing her guitar and singing. Her voice is incredible...and she attends Washougal High School! I told her she was going to be famous some day.   We also browsed through some of their copies of music vinyl....there were some cool choices there. If you live in Washougal and live on a waterfront....or if you live on the banks of the Washougal River, you may wonder if your property will experience a flood? (There are a couple different descriptions of waterfront: creek, pond, pool or river.) In this blog, I'm speaking specifically about the Washougal River.  It does get very high sometimes. Where we live on the river, we have "markers" where we look out across the river and can tell from the height of the river whether it is coming up to flood.   In the past, (only once in the 15 years that we have lived here) we have helped some of our neighbors along the river "sandbag" their property.
