You never know what pleasant surprise you may run into whenever you decide to pop by Occoquan, Virginia to see what’s happening. Occoquan is a quaint and very historical community, nestled on the Occoquan river, that seems to have a surprise around every corner, nook and cranny.   Yesterday, on a whim, I decided I would swing by the farmer’s market there to see what varieties of delectable home grown organic treats awaited. To my grand surprise, I found myself smack-dab in the middle of the town of Occoquan’s annual “Riverfest” which is one of the activities held by the Occoquan River Communities. There were costumed re-enactors, a trolley ride, petting zoo, pony rides, live music throughout the town as well as sidewalk sales from the local merchants. There was even a lemonade stand wi...

Tucked off of the main street in Historic Occoquan VA is the patio for The Garden Kitchen.  The restaurant is a great place to sneak away on a nice spring day for a bite to eat with friends.  This week the azaleas were in full bloom making this patio a perfect oasis.    Photo taken with my Droid.

The cherry blossoms in Occoquan are at their peak right now in Occoquan, VA. Why fight the crowds on the metro to DC when you can park your car and stroll in the quaint riverside town of Historic Occoquan. This town has so much history and charm from the pedestrian walk along the river, the walking bridge crossing the river, the numerous historic locations and the unique shops. If you need a place to unwind and leave your cares behind, this is the place.  Easter Sunday had the most breathtaking cherry blossoms.     If you live in Prince William County spend a day in Occoquan to feel like you're on vacation!

When the sun is out and the humidity is low my thoughts turn to sneaking off to Madigan's Resturant for lunck on the deck.  With views of the Occoquan River and the antics of the ducks it is a great escape from the ringing cell phone and stacks of paperwork on my desk. Madigan's in located in the historic Town of Occoquan just off I-95 and Route 123 in Prince William County.  It is one of those hidden gems in the area that many people drive right by without even knowing it is there.  Madigan's has a prime spot in town right on the Commerce Street and just across from the Prince William County Tourist Center. You can always expect friendly service from the staff and you won't leave hungry.  Seafood is their specialty and it is fresh daily.  You won't find crabs when it isn't crab season ...

Most people zooming across the Occoquan River on Route 123 or driving south on interstate 95 aren't thinking about the history of our area. Hidden among all of the mega subdivisions and marinas on the Occoquan River in Prince William County is the historic Town of Occoquan. The town's history can be traced back to the indigenous Native American Dogue Indians who inhabited much of the Occoquan River area. The Town of Occoquan growth as a settlement began in the 18th century as a mill town. It was prospering by 1765 with a grist mill, tobacco warehouses and foundry. As one of the high water points of the Occoquan River at the time, Occoquan became not only a successful commercial area it also attracted weekend tourists from DC who came to stay at the Rockledge Hotel. The town was official...
