Fort Sam Houston is the location for a new Army Medical Department Center and School's Center for Predeployment Medicine. The CPDM will offer training to combat medics, nurses, senior noncommissioned medics, physicians, and  their assistants and will cover everything from providing first aid on the battlefield to support in combat hospitals. I spent a lot of time on the San Antonio River Walk back in August the week before my daughter's wedding. There were guests in town for the wedding and most of the dinners and partying were held on The River Walk.                                                                                   After one of the dinners, a group of us decided to take a leisurely walk down The River Walk.  As we approached the Hyatt Regency Hotel, we heard the music -- Jazz Music.  We decided to go in to The Landing, to listen to the music of The Jim Cullum Jazz Band.  They are a 7 piece Classic Jazz Ensemble and play at The Landing Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 8:00 pm. We enjoyed the music so much, we decided to meet at The Landing the following evening after dinner.  Don & I arrived early in or...

I went back to see the restored Sunken Gardens at Brackenridge Park last weekend. There were a couple of musicians playing New Age music in the stone pagoda, which was actually rather nice. Although it was about 85 degrees, as usual in September, the walkways were shaded by the trees. They were not covered in blooms as they were on my first visit, but there were a lot of other flowers and greenery to admire. A moth whose wings glittered with gold iridescence in the sunshine The Sunken Gardens, located next to Brackenridge Park and the Zoo, is one of my favorite places in San Antonio. They are free to visit, although donations for their continued restoration and upkeep would be welcome. Enjoy the show!

Now that the hottest San Antonio months are behind us, this could be a good time for that garage sale or yard sale you have been putting off.  Soon we will all being doing some major housecleaning in preparation for the holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah.  So now is a great time to clear out all the items taking up space in your home that you no longer need.  You can make some extra cash in the process.  A garage sale is pretty simple to prepare for and can be a lot of fun for everyone involved.  If you have kids at home, they always enjoy projects like this.  It seems to bring out their inner entrepreneur!  Or you could invite a sibling or neighbor to have a joint garage sale, including helping with organizing and pricing items and putting up directional signs.  If you want a...

Whenever we are downtown and it is lunch time, we often head over to the 4th Street Café located at 207 4th Street where we can enjoy a great lunch and provide support to help serve the homeless in downtown San Antonio.  The café is owned and operated by the First Baptist Church, "feeding people, physically and spiritually, in a friendly environment."  Chef Fred always makes it a point to stop by each table to say hello and make sure you are enjoying your meal. The cafe's receipts, including tips, help support MANNA (Meals Available for the Nutritional Needs of All.)  MANNA serves a free hot meal to over 200 homeless every day at the Community Ministries Center at 212 N. Alamo. Comfort food is their specialty:  Fresh homemade soups, super sandwiches, special salads, hamburgers, hot lunc...

Moving companies do not handle the shipment of pets, so this is one aspect of moving you will need to arrange yourself. When we moved from San Antonio to Washington D.C. we left our miniature dachshund with my husband's parents, who then shipped him to us by air after we were settled in.  My daughter's cat has traveled by air on several occasions.  Shipping animals by air is the fastest and most convenient method of getting your pet to your new home.  Most airlines are familiar with the care and handling requirements of animals and will advise you on the requirements.  You will need to have all vaccinations up to date and have copies of your pet's vet records.  Our vet gave us a tranquilizer to administer before shipping. If you choose to take your pet with you in the car, call ahead to...

My office Manager (Lisa) and I had lunch with some of our resource providers the other day.  We met with David Salinas with World Wide Pest Control and James Gonzalez with Farmers Insurance.    We met at Canyon Cafe which is in the Alamo Quarry...we are talking SHOPPING galore!  Whatever you need is in this quaint shopping center...er, sorry getting off the subject here...back to the food.   Yes, we all sat down and the place is well lit, bright, tall ceilings and the atmosphere was popping!  It was a Thursday afternoon and it seemed everyone was there!   The menu is very extensive.  They have a lot of southwestern style food but also have a chicken fried steak...so, everyone can get what they want.  They serve chips and salsa (with the red Chile peppers from New Mexico) delicious!    ...

My sister Sheila and I had lunch today at Piatti's Ristorante & Bar in the quarry off 281 on Basse Road.  Right around the corner from shopping galore you can stop in for a bite to eat.  We were on a mission to have lunch so shopping was not in the cards, we had food on the mind. What a delicious environment, meal & experience.  Piatti's has lunch, dinner, dessert & a wine list. All of my favorite things! We started with the yummy bread & caesar salad.   The caesar salad has romaine hearts, pecorino romano, herbed croutons & garlic anchovy dressing.  Next we had the POLLO AL FARNO which sounds fancy schmancy & is!  Pollo is chicken in spanish, it was delicious, tender, herb roasted pollo.  The chicken was matched with mashed potatoes & a wood oven carrot.  I don't usually care for carro...

I have passed Fralo's Art of Pizza in Leon Springsmany times and remarked to my husband that we should give it a try and this week-end we plan to do just that.  If you are going to be in the La Cantera or Leon Springs area, stop in at this picturesque restaurant, reminiscent of an Italian village, and enjoy the wonderful artisan pizzaserved here.  The owners are Frank and Lori Hakspiel and their restaurant has been the recipient of many local awards.  The pizzas are handmade, of course, and salads and pastas are available as well.  You may even bring your favorite bottle of wine.  Enjoy dining and live music on the patio with family, friends, or business associates.  This is a pet friendly restaurant but verify this before bringing your dog in with you. Visit their website www.fralos.co...

Back in January of 2007, Microsoft announced its decision to build a new data center in San Antonio. The city and county approved a tax incentive package for the data center. The 477,000 square foot center located in Westover Hills in Northwest San Antonio has now been completed.  The official opening of the facility will be held on Monday, September 22.  The cost to Microsoft for developing the data center is $550 million.  The center will host web pages and house servers round the clock.  Microsoft is in the process of hiring 75 employees to staff the center.  Microsoft is based in Redmond, Washington.

It's been many days that I have been trying to collect my thoughts about this post.    My husband is a Captain in the San Antonio Fire Department.  He was called up to start up the shelters at PORT SA here on the south side of San Antonio about 9/4/08.  The first 10 days he worked (7 days a week) a 24 hr shift and had 12 hrs off (in which to eat and sleep) which was REALLY hard on my boys and myself (now I was trying to play all roles around here).  So, the boys and I were able to see him (bleary eyed, horizontal in bed) for just a little bit of time every day.  The storm by this time had come and went.  He talked about standing in his steel toed boots for 24 hours (no sleeping like at the fire house), the command phone ringing a minimum of 200 calls a shift, EVERYONE in his midst ne...

The announcement was made yesterday that Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. will build new dormitories at Fort Sam Houston for the Army's new Medical Education and Training Campus development program.  The homes will be built through Fleetwood's Trendsetter Homes division. The company will build 682 modular sections at its facility in Belton, Texas where they will be shipped to San Antonio.  The living units will make up the majority of the new METC (Medical Education Training Campus) dormitories, which will house up to 2,400 military medical personnel for short-term training and education.  Construction of the $1 billion Medical Education and Training Campus began in July. It should be completed in 2011. Medics from the Army, Navy, and Air Force will participate in the unified training program...
