In this market, there are a lot of houses for sale in Denton, so I've prepared a short summary of the area with some links that might help people know more about the area. Located at the point in which I-35 E and I-35 W meet, Denton enjoys a unique spot in the Metroplex. Denton is approximately 40 miles from both Dallas and Fort Worth, completing the top of the “Golden Triangle” and connecting residents to all the museums, nightlife, and sports the bigger cities provide. Denton is very entertaining in its own right and regularly receives visitors from surrounding cities and towns. Although Denton continues to grow, the city strives to incorporate an active and outdoor lifestyle for its residents. This is very evident in all the houses for sale in Denton at the moment. Many of them have ...

Just when you think you've read it all... A man was knocked unconscious and a ketchup bottle poured over his head on Sunday close to the 1200 block of South Loop 288 in Denton Texas. The man was found by a store employee the next morning as the employee was watering plants in a shed near the store. The store employee thought the man was covered in blood and called the police. The police responded and the victim told the officer that he had purchased some items from the store and walked into a shed. Someone hit him in the back of the head and he lost consciousness.  He awoke with a lump on the back of his head, scrapes on his knees and his pants pulled down to his ankles. He was covered in ketchup, he said.  Upon investigating the scene, the officer found a pool of ketchup and a note r...

Today I'd like to introduce another historical property.  This property is located on 1018 W. Oak, Denton, Texas. The property was built in 1939 and designated as historical in December, 1994.  This residential home is built in the Bungalow/Craftsman style of architecture.   Typical of the "Bungalow - Craftsman" style, this property has low-pitched, gabled roof, wide overhang of eaves, exposed rafters (rafter tails) under eaves, decorative brackets (knee braces or corbels); incised porch (beneath main roof); tapered or square columns supporting roof or porch; 4-over-1 or 6-over-1 sash windows, often with Frank Lloyd Wright design motifs; hand-crafted stone or woodwork, often mixed materials throughout structure. Bungalows can either be front-gabled, side-gabled, or cross-gabled. The ter...

According to the Lewisville Leader local newspaper, Dr. Georgia Caraway is retiring today after 15 years as the Executive Director of the Denton County Museums. Dr. Caraway has been dedicated to antiques, art, and museum history for a long time. I actually took some classes from her about 13 years ago before she took this position.  A lovely lady and a jewel in Denton County, her knowledge is astounding. During her time in this position, Dr. Caraway helped establish Denton County ownership of the Courthouse-on-the-Square and was very instrumental in developing the Historical Park of Denton County. The Historical Park includes the Bayless-Selby House Museum and the Denton County African American Museum.  I've written blogs about both of these historical places.  Dr. Caraway has also been...

It's that time again to show you another historic property in Denton County, Texas! Today's blog focus is on a property located at 818 W. Oak, in the heart of Denton Texas - the Oak-Hickory Historic District.  The property was designated as a historic property in 1981. This home was build in 1923 in the Bungalow (Airplane) style of architecture. This style dates from the early 20th century and grew out of the Arts and Crafts Movement.  The bungalow style prevailed in the US from about 1910-1930s and came to be associated with the middle classes and suburban domestic architecture. Most are 1 1/2 story homes with 5-7 rooms.  The roof pitch varies from moderate to slight with some sort of veranda or porch in the front. Eaves are characteristically wide and bays are kept to a minimum. Just ...

I got a phone call this afternoon from an out of state area code.  I never know what to do with these.  I take great pride in being accessible and answer my phone as much as possible.  However, I hate being burdened with phone calls from sales people who are trying to get me to advertise or buy something I can't live without. I answered this particular call and had a production coordinator from HGTV's "My First Sale" on the other end.  She said they have a seller on the show who needs to go tour some homes that are decorated well and show the way a home is supposed to show.  I told her I didn't see any problems with this but would rather have a contract...can they bring a buyer through?  How about "House Hunters" instead!? This is a beautiful home in a neighborhood with a lot of homes f...

The University of Texas are not just known as the "Mean Green", they will also be known for saving bees.  Bees?  That's right, bees! A huge colony of bees were discovered on the campus in Denton, Texas, living in the walls a the school's Radio, TV and Film building. The university had been willing to leave the bees there until the bees showed aggressiveness. Just one of the many colonies had been living within those walls for 18 years! Originally, the bees (numbered in the millions) were scheduled to be exterminated but once the workers sawed into the wall, the bees, their hives, and even parts of hte the wall were coming out. UNT decided to save the bees.  "They investigated and realized there was damage to the building, so they had to remove them, and remove them safely," a UNT offici...

Today's focus is on a property located in Denton, Texas.  This beautiful Victorian home is located at 723 W. Oak, Denton, Texas.  Located in the Oak-Hickory Historic District, this property was built in 1898 and designated as historic in January, 1981.  Although this home has some aspects of Gothic architecture, this property is primarily built in Victorian style architecture. Typical of Victorian architecture, this home incorporates decorative details seen in the brackets, spindles porch posts and gables. This home's exterior is highly ornamental with plenty of pattern-work.  Can't you just picture the homeowners in the Victorial era, sitting in the rocking chairs on the ample front porch one calm evening?

Historical Properties of Denton County, Texas, Issue 4 Today my focus is on a historical home in Denton, Texas (Denton County) that is built in the Prairie architectural style.  Personally, I just love the covered porche.  This particular property is located at 1003 W. Oak and was designated as historical in 1981. This particular home is one of many on historical Oak Street and located in the heart of Denton, very close to University of North Texas. Frank Lloyd Wright is the most famouse architect of the Prairie style, although wasn't Wright's only styles. The Prairie style has a predominately horizontal appearance with a broad gabled roof and widely overhanging eaves.  Most of these homes are built with two stories.  Variations of exterior finishes include colored brick, stucco, and wo...

I see some of the cool nature scenes upcoming around the country like the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. and think to myself what does our prairie like landscaping with many former cotton fields which are FLAT have to offer for a visitor to North Texas? Well in addition to our roadside blue Bluebonnets that are soon to be sprouting up everywhere (the State flower) along with other wildflowers, one tree that SCREAMS spring is here for at least a few weeks is the            REDBUD. It has brilliant red or pink buds prior to the leaves turning green and if you think nature doesn't have its cycle even around here you are not opening your eyes. The tulips and the daffodils sprout up around here too almost like clockwork in the gardens! Anyway on the calendar planning for April in the ci...

Today, I'm highlighting another historical building in Denton County, TX.  This house is located in the Oak-Hickory Historic District, just a few blocks away from the historic courthouse on 811 E. Oak, Denton, Texas.  There are many styles of architecture in this area. The Oak-Hickory Historic District was established in 1986 and houses the largest concentration of Historic Landmark Designations in Denton, Texas and was built in the Georgian Revival style.  The original Georgian style was named after the four kings named George who reigned successively during this period. Rooted in the classical design principals of ancient Rome, this English style came to America by way of British pattern books and an ever-swelling wave of masons, carpenters, and joiners who emigrated from England.
