It's often difficult, here in Dallas, to be a REALTOR® and also be happy about the local Real Estate news reporting.  We suffer, along with many other cities, from a media that is all too anxious to report the doom and gloom of the real estate market.  Ironically, when you compare the Dallas real estate market to the national market (and most other similar sized cities) we compare quite favorably... in fact, our market is quite healthy.... ...but I don't believe you would get that impression from reading the newspaper.  And the problem that causes is that as a REALTOR® when I tell my clients that it's a healthy market they refuse to believe me.  They don't come right out and call me liar, but they say things like "Well that's not what I read in the newspaper!" or "My family in Florida s... 05/23/2008

Years ago, when I was still in high school, I was part of a nationwide delegation that had the privilege to visit the nations Capitol and meet senators, representatives, and several other political and public figures of our country.  I toured the halls of congress, visited the great monuments dedicated to former Presidents Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington and even dined in the restaurants where past luminaries like Nixon, Kennedy, and Johnson enjoyed their lunches and dinners.  However, one of the greatest moments that I witnessed was the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The Dallas Country Club hosted a Texas Shoot Out for the second year. This test of commercial real estate skills was an impressive display of talent, intellectual strength, and ability. Teams of four to six people were assigned to evaluate a complex real estate situation. This situation focused on the sales-leaseback arrangements as well as the corporation consolidation of two business campuses in a difficult market. Yes, I did it... I walked to Starbucks this morning... and I will admit I felt like a bit of a freak doing it.A couple of years ago I sold my house and moved to a condo in the Uptown/Turtle Creek section of Dallas.  I was tired of the responsibilities that a house brought with it and longed for a less personally responsible lifestyle like I had when I lived in my co-op in New York City a few years prior.  I missed the urbanism (which does not exist in Dallas) and decide that Uptown was close enough and that I would see how I liked it.  For over two years now though, while I do not miss mowing grass or pruning trees or treating fire ant mounds, something else was missing...  it was the lack of freedom from the car.
