There is a young artist at work in Atascocita.  And she just happens to be one of my team member's grandchildren.  Her name is Emily.  She is 8 years old.  She created this remarkable likeness of her grandma for Grandparents Day at her school.  Athough we all loved the attention to detail, no one was prouder than her grandma.  Thanks Emily! This morning began by checking in with Active Rain to see what interesting blogs I could enjoy over my cup of Pumpkin Spice coffee, when I came across this post. Wilson Hill - Worthington Names / Maureen McCabe I commented on the rich history of Worthington and the use of settler's names being tied in to the street names.  That got me thinking about the street names in some communities today.  Not so rich in history.  In fact, some are almost humorous in their conglomeration of street names.  Or the flip side of that, where there are just more names than streets available, so streets just change names for no apparent reason.  Both of these situations exist in Walden on Lake Houston in Atascocita. Our community has several "villages" within it.  Here are a few to ponder.  Sportsman's Vil...

Due to Hurricane Ike, at this time last year in Walden on Lake Houston, we were in the middle of 11 days without power.  We were able to heat water for coffee because we still had natural gas power.  AND a friend loaned us her french press for coffee.  Cooking was a different story because most food had spoiled and the grocery stores had looonnngggg lines (as did the gas stations, my 4 hour wait is  another story).  We learned to live by flashlight & candles.  We glistened a lot (remember in the South ladies don't sweat - they glisten) and depended on the kindness of neighbors & friends.  As power was restored, those kind souls offered laundry facilities, bags of ice, recharging for cell phones (which only worked when FEMA released the cell towers), food, air conditioning & TV (we almos...

I am working on the green thing in Atascocita.  Not golf.  Not money.  The whole "kindness to the environment" thing.  Being Green! Since I am new to the process, I thought I'd share what I'm learning along the way - just in case someone wants to join me in being Green!  Try as I may, I have a hard time getting away from plastic water bottles.  My reuseable water bottle isn't working 100% yet, so I am going to start with recyling those pesky plastic water bottles.  Both at work & home.  I started with Googling "How to Recycle."  That led me to www.ehow.com, which said: "The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has set a national goal to recycle 25 percent of our national waste. Some plastics can be recycled through curbside recycling, grocery store drop bins or drop-off centers. A rais...

Last night was the Campaign Kick-off Celebration for Dan Huberty's run for State Representative of District 127.  It was held at Walden on Lake Houston Country Club.  And the event was a huge success.  it was great to see Dan's wife Janet, as well as his three children, Brianna, Ryan & Dylan - they are a great family & always willing to offer help when you need it.  You know, it takes a lot of effort to get a grass roots campaign going.  Friends, family & neighbors all have to come together to work on behalf of someone they believe in.  It is apparent that Dan Huberty has that support in his bid for office.  There were over 250 people that showed at Walden for this event! If you're asking, "What can I do?" - go to the Dan Huberty Website for ways to support Dan.  Volunteer help will alw...

Reading in Atascocita.  I know a good majority of my friends, family & clients enjoy reading.  And although it's fun to browse a bookstore for just the right book, it is great to get a book recommendation from someone you know.  Here are a couple of those books to put on your own list! South of Broad - Pat Conway Alex Cross's Trial - James Patterson One of my team members enjoys her reading on her Kindle. She is able to buy books at any time, get free samples & read several books (and a few magazines) at the same time.  A good website for book reviews is Library Thing.  You can list the books you've read.  You can see reviews of those books and many others.  If you're in a book club, you can find suggested questions to use for discussion.  There are forums, local events & giveaways.  If...

Okay, how many of us remember our mom saying something like this, "You can have the popsicle, but take it outside."  It saved the sticky drips from being on the floor.  And it was so much more fun without having the paper wrapped around the stick to prevent (yea, right) the dripping.  It's still popsicle weather here in Atascocita.  Enjoy. We hear about being green all the time.  And I'm guilty of wanting to do the right thing but not completely following through.  Sure I have the grocery totes and use those.  In fact, that is one of my giveaway items to the community.  The bag logo is below & I can tell you everyone has enjoyed those bags!  I do recycle magazines and newspapers to the bins in the parking lots around the area.  But I need to ramp it up a bit and take total advantage of the Kingwood Recycling Center.  Located in the parking lot of the Metro Park 'n Ride, it's just beyond the Kingwood Library.  It can be accessed from W. Lake Houston Pkwy.  Bins are available to collect Paper, Glass, Metal & Plastic Bottles & Containers (#1, #2, #3, #4, #5 & #7 - not #6).  It is open from noon on Friday to Monday morning.  ...

Cooking in Atascocita.  That could mean the real estate business is really jumping here.  Or it could mean Your Texas Connection's production is hot.  Or it could mean that we enjoy food creation in Atascocita.  Yep.  The last one is correct.  I'm going to share a favorite recipe.  Hope you enjoy it as well. The first census was taken in 1790.  And it has been taken every ten years since.  Beginning in February & March of 2010, questionnaires will be delivered by mail to households.  The importance of the census is its affect on funding for your community and your representation in Congress.  And your response is required by law.  The 2010 Census is using a short form for compiling its statistics.  Easy to fill out, it simply requires name, sex, age, date of birth, race, ethnicity, realtionship & housing tenure.  It's confidential.  Just complete and mail back.  In April through July, census takers will visit those households that haven't responded to the questionnaires by mail.    Susan Brown, Your Texas Connection sells real estate in Walden on Lake Houston, Eagle Springs, Summerwood, Ata...

Atascocita, Texas.  Is it a city?  No, Atascocita is really a large development on both sides of FM 1960, a little ways east of Humble.  Wikipedia has Atascocita listed as a CDP.  And before you ask, here is the Wiki definition of a CDP.  A census-designated place (CDP) is a type of place (a concentration of population) identified by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes. Continue reading.. We do have a giant A located by Lake Houston.  And if you said to an Atascocita resident, "it's over by the giant A," that resident would know just where you meant.  We have about 60,000 people in the area and our school district is the Humble ISD.  We have seen a 41% growth in population in a little over a 6 year span.  Roads that were two-lane are now four lanes with a median.  S...

Doughnuts.  When I say the word, I think of Homer Simpson drooling.  Or I think of going to Shipley's here in Atascocita to pick up a dozen.  Or the Atascocita HEB.  Or Best Doughnuts in front of the Atascocita Golf Course.  They all have delicious offerings.  Coffee, anyone?   Susan Brown, Your Texas Connection sells real estate in Walden on Lake Houston, Eagle Springs, Summerwood, Atascocita, TX, Kingwood Greens, Royal Shores & Kingwood, TX - just to name a few!  Susan's the team leader for Your Texas Connection at Keller Williams Realty NE.  Visit their website for more in depth info about the team and what they can do for you.  Or call Susan direct (281) 415-1454 if you'd like her to start working on your behalf today!

Tasting the Town sounds intriguing already!  And the event will be held at the Humble Civic Center on Thursday, October 15, 2009.  Tickets are $15 in advance at HEB in Atascocita & Kingwood or at Mission Burrito in Atascocita. Event founder, Jennifer Jozwiak, said, "It has been nearly 15 years since our area has had an event like this for the community to enjoy,"  She encourages everyone to "Eat. Drink. Enjoy. Repeat."  The sponsors are HEB & Mission Burrito.  They will host booths at the event.  Also a part of the the fun are McDonald's McCafe, Hector's Mexican, Black Eyed Pea, Joe's Crab Shack, Monterey's,  Italiano's, Texas Roadhouse, Rico's Grill and Java Pi Cafe.  And the list goes on!  A "Beer Bistro Booth" featuring Silver Eagle and Anheuser Busch, as well as wine-sampling from M...
