Does every member of your family know what to do in a home emergency?   Early this month when a tornado narrowly missed my home by a quarter mile to the south and east, it got me to thinking about my family’s plan during an even such as this.  In this particular case it was about lunch time on a week day.  My wife was at work, my son was at school, about a half mile down the road, and my infant daughter was at daycare on the other side of the city.  I was in my home office working but mostly keeping an eye on the news and the storm. I’ll say up front that every one of us were lucky enough to not be directly impacted by the tornado.  It came closest to me at home, and my son at school.  I knew it was coming of course and when the hail started coming down hard and larger than golf balls...

Arlington, Texas Located just east of Fort Worth Arlington, Texas is a great area to raise a family. There are many neighborhoods that will suit every type of style and budget out there. Friendly communities and down to earth neighbors make for the charm and grace of Arlington. Weather in the summer can be miserably hot, making outdoor activities in the water an attractive necessity to many residents. However, winter temperatures are fairly reasonable, with a couple of inches of snow fall each winter. There are many colleges and universities in Arlington. The three most prominent are University of Texas at Arlington, Southeast Campus of Tarrant County College, and Arlington Baptist College. Arlington has a great mixture of rural elegance and the fun city life. Many homes in Arlington ar...

This weekend as I spent time in the DFW airport and Birmingham airport, I couldn't help but notice a certain distinguished presence. No, I'm not talking about the professionally dry cleaned navy blue uniformed American Airlines employees frustrated over yet another bankrupt day in paradise (or wherever they are flying) although I am sympathetic towards them, because, to be honest, most of the pilots and mechanics (and many other transporation related occupations) probably fall into the category I am about to post about, anyway... a whole other sort of "navy" blue or army green stood at every terminal. I am talking about the honor of the presence of so many of our servicemen and women returning home. And I like it. Safe and sound at my home with my garden stake American flag, I checked t...

Buying a HUD home in Arlington, TX.  There are many good home buying opportunities in Arlington through HUD listings.  Currently there are 11 HUD homes total in Arlington with 6 of those listed for under $100,000.  The homes vary in quality and condition but even those that are lacking the appeal one would hope for could quite possibly be picked such a fair price that you could afford to put some money in for improvements.  Some are ready or very close to ready for move in. Something to know when looking at the possibility of buying a HUD home is that some are only open for offers from people who intend on living in the home(Owner Occupants), along with non-profit agencies and government agencies.  In the case of the current listings in Arlington, there are only 2 at this time that ar...

This is a follow up to my blog post from 12/5/11, “Who has the best burger in Arlington, TX?”.  I ended that post in a kind of tongue-in-cheek way by saying Whataburger was the winner of In-N-Out Burger and Five Guys.  Honestly I would be just as likely to go get a Whataburger when I want a good burger as I would either of the others so it wasn’t completely a joke.   But now…there are 2 new contenders that I have sampled in the last week.  When Dick Greenberg commented on my last post and mentioned SmashBurger, I knew it sounded familiar.  It wasn’t well publicized as when we got In-N-Out Burger, but we did in fact just get a SmashBurger.  So yes, I went and tried it out.  And shocker…it’s a good burger!  As I mentioned in the earlier blog, I think, I like burgers.  It would be diffic...

It was a great season for the Martin Warriors of Arlington, TX!  The Warriors went all the way to the State Quarterfinals of the Texas High School Football Playoffs this year.  After defeating Midland, San Angelo Central, and the nationally ranked Euless Trinity Trojans, the Warriors fell just short against the always strong Southlake Carroll Dragons.  Martin finished the season with an overall record of 12-2 with their only regular season loss coming at the hands of cross town rival, Arlington High School.   One thing is for sure…these players really gave the Southwest Arlington area something to be very proud of.  With those 12 team wins there were some very impressive individual efforts including senior quarterback Brodie Lambert.  Brodie completed 100 passes for a total of 1370 ya...

Take care of your home this winter.  If I hadn’t already figured out that winter was here before I stepped out in the bitter cold this morning, well I definitely know now.  Even here in Texas, where we see ridiculously high temperatures in the summer, it’s gets down right cold in the winter and there are things you have to do to prepare your home.  Here are a few home winterizing tips to make this winter go by with a little fuss and unexpected expense as possible.       1.           This is easy. Cover your outside faucets to prevent the pipes from freezing.  The cheap covers are usually only a dollar or two at your local hardware store.   2.          Some say to have your home heating system checked by a pro every year.  For some that’s not practical but if it’s been a while, call a ...

Who has the best burger in Arlington, TX?  Well this question has become more complicated in the last few months due to In-N-Out Burger and Five Guys Burgers and Fries throwing their hats into the ring.  I’ve recently been able to try both In-N-Out and Five Guys and probably by no surprise I liked them both.  I think it’s hard to make a burger that’s not good.  Of course not only do I like burgers but I just like food in general   So this is what I think.  At In-N-Out I had a double-double, animal style.  It’s a double cheeseburger and the animal style adds more sauce, pickles, grilled onions and mustard fried into the meat.  It was very tasty.  I’ll definitely be going back.  And I thought their fries were really good too.  Another great feature of In-N-Out is that they have really goo...
