"I am Addison!"  That's the theme and slogan for the 2009 Addison, Texas calendar.  Town employees delivered the calendars to home owners last week (in the cold and wet, thank you!) and if you didn't receive yours, there are some available at the Addison Athletic Club. Of the 15 faces on the cover, I recognized three immediately.  They are starred (*) below. Two nights ago, I received a phone call.  The polite young woman on the other end of the line asked if I had some time to answer questions about the Town of Addison.  Sure.  Why not? I was asked my opinion on how the town is being run.  Could I name the Mayor?  Did I know the names of the council members?  If the May election were to be held now, how would I vote?  The woman asking the questions had potential match-ups.  Wait a minute, I told her.  Who exactly commissioned this survey?  She said she certainly did not have access to that information. I continued answering her questions for about 20 minutes and then ended the call. Yesterday as I climbed the stairway to get to the treadmills, I overheard Paul ask B.L., "How do people find out about the Addison Athletic Club?"  I'm sure he was asking because not just the parking lot, but the whole club was fairly empty.  I pondered that as I walked my 2 miles. This is my second time living in Addison.  Back in the eary 1980s, before the club was built, I learned about it because I volunteered to serve on the planning committee for the AAC.  My tenure was short-lived because I moved out of Addison before much happened and you have to be an Addison resident or an Addison employee to use the facility.  So, I knew about the club before it was built.  The Athletic Club was one of the many reasons I moved back to the Town of Addison. At the November meeting of the Addison Town Council, Methodist Hospital applied for a special use permit to build a "special surgery" hospital in Addison.  Plans include either a 3-story or 5-story buidling to house inpatients and outpatients for orthopedic, spine and ENT surgery, an emergency room, imaging services, physical therapy and rehab, and a laboratory.  They anticipate having 32 beds for acute care and 4 beds for intensive care.  The developer is Nueterra Real Estate and the architect is BOKA Powell.  Keep your eye on the tract of land west of the Tollway and east of Addison Road, just south of Excel Parkway! 12/09/2008

Michelle Laurence, Animal Control Officer, spoke to the Addison Pacesetters at the monthly coffee klatch at Dunn Bros Coffee on Beltline Road last week.  She was entertaining and informative.  Topics ranged from bobcats to feral cats and from feeding the ducks in Les Lacs (please, don't) to walking cats on leashes (no leash law for cats, but keep your dog on the leash and the leash in your hand).  Michelle's position falls within the Public Works Department.  If your neighbor's dog barks at all hours, call her. If there are opposums, squirrels or other rodents on the loose, she's the one to contact.  All stray animals are held for 72 hours in the hopes that the owners will be reunited with their pets. For feral cat problems, Michelle will bring a trap and then works with an organization... 12/07/2008

Dennis Kraft, the Deputy Mayor Pro Tempore of Addison, Texas passed away last week due to complications from cancer.   Dennis was a warm, sincere public servant and he will be missed.  He was first elected to the Addison City Council in May 2005 and continued to serve on Council until his untimely death. The flags at all Town facilities are flying at half mast in recognition of his contributions and service to the Town. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 7 at 2:30 pm at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas TX. The family has requested that donations be made to either the American Cancer Society or the Addison Arbor Foundation. While it is only whispered among blog posters, the undisputed King of Active Rain members is Virginia-Washington, D.C. Re/Max Realtor, Brian Block. Earlier this year, he got a call from one of his Re/Max colleagues, Terry Rudman.  "Do you have a contact in Dallas who I can trust to help my daughter buy a condo?" she asked him. Brian recommended me.  What a compliment.  Terry did what every mom should do.  She called and talked to me to be sure that from my voice and answers, Brian had given her good advice.  (She used her very authoritative school teacher voice, probably to spook me into spilling the beans if there were any to spill.) Addison is well-known for KaboomTown, the annual Independence Day celebration with spectacular fireworks.  There are bound to be more fireworks at Mayor Chow's next Town Meeting on Monday evening, October 27th, 2008 at the Addison Conference & Theatre Centre, 15650 Addison Rd.  On the agenda: the proposed bond program for the Addison Arts and Events District. This bond program includes funds to: create a world-class aviation museum by providing a permanent home for the aircraft in the Cavanaugh Flight Museum's collection expand the Addison Theatre Centre to include a 500-seat venue for the WaterTower Theatre build a parking garage These components should position Addison as a choice destination by creating an Arts District to complement the Dallas Arts District. Tuesday night, October 7th, the residents of the Midway Meadows subdivision in Addison Texas congregated at Dome park to celebrate National Night Out.  Thanks to Sam's Club, ice cream and water was available.  The Locked Out Comedy troupe performed.  Meatball sandwiches (yum!) were provided by Jane and Franceso Secchi, owners of Ferrari's restaurant. Addison police and firemen joined us, as well as Mayor Joe Chow and council members Greg Hirsch, Todd Meier and Roger Mellow.  Our city manager, police chief and fire chief were there, too.
