On Sunday, approximately 200 residents of the Midway Meadows subdivision in Addison Texas met at Dome Park for a block party and a good time was had by all! Neighbors Jane and Francesco Secchi, owners of Ferrari's Italian Villa restaurant on Midway Road between Spring Valley and Beltline, graciously provided the food and drink.  The Cover Ups (formerly the Daddy-Os) kept us musically entertained. Addison police, fire, and EMS attended.  The K-9 unit was there and we had a demonstration of our police dog's abilities.  The Mayor and current council members were invited guests.  And our City Manager and neighbor participated. How's this for irony?  When you mail a letter to Addison's Mayor at Town Hall, the address is Dallas TX  75254, not Addison TX  75001!  What???? Addison is relatively small by Dallas standards, about 15,000 residents. There used to be 5 zip codes for Addison ten years ago, but a new post office with state of the art facilities was constructed and most Addison postal customers voted to receive their mail from the new facility with a 75001 zip.  The measure did not pass in 75254, thus the two zip codes for the town. The 75254 zip code encompasses the area south of Beltline Road and east of Addison Road.  And it gets pretty confusing.  Take the addresses of two businesses on the north east corner of Beltline and Addison Roads, right next door to each other. Addison Pacesetters (the 50+ group) meet the first Wednesay of each month at Dunn Bros. Coffeehouse on Beltline Road and learn about the Town of Addison.  This month, Mr. Chad Hancock, Network Specialist in the IT Department, spoke to us. Here are some interesting tidbits from his presentation: Chad has responsibilities for the help desk, PC support, keeping the town's website up and running, the wireless cameras, and the wireless credit card machines at the town's special events (like Taste Addison). Current projects underway include implementing document management (going paperless) and replacing the 35 servers (happens every 6 years and is a $900,000 project). If you get pulled over in Addison, think twice about out-running the local police! Hear Ye!  The Mayor and Town Council of Addison, Texas are holding a Town Meeting on Thursday, April 2, 2009.  This is a semi-annual event where citizens gather for an update on the state of the city. As one of my neighbors is fond of saying "Silly season is upon us." Addison residents will choose a Mayor and four town council members on May 9, 2009 (early voting runs from April 27 til May 5).  Three candidates are vying for Mayor: incumbent Joe Chow, seeking a 3rd term; former council member Todd Meier, who stepped down from his council seat to run for Mayor; and newcomer Tamara Whitman, who appeared before the Council in November, 2008 to voice concerns about voting in the bond election. It seems like we're barely past the November presidential election and here we are again at the start of another campaign season.  Municipal elections in Addison are May 9th, with early voting from April 27th through May 5th.  Today was the first day to file to run for office.  Mayor Joe Chow has not yet filed but is expected to run for a third term.  He will be challenged by Todd Meier who resigned from his Town Council seat to run. In the Council race, 4 seats are open.  Dennis Kraft's untimely death created one of the openings.  Kimberly Lay was appointed to fill his unexpired term and is expected to run as the incumbent for that seat.    Two current council members are barred from running due to term limits.  They are Greg Hirsch and Jimmy Niemann. Here are some interesting tidbits from his presentation: Matt assists with the budget and with purchasing.  His daily task include coordination and advertising of bids to ensure the bids are competitive.  He makes sure that purchasing order requirements are met.  He does strategic analysis of budget use. And he helps the town's departments to make sure they have all the resources they need. Lynn Spruill was Addison's Mayor from 1988 to 1992. Now a city park in the Fairfield development in the Addison Circle area will be named for the former Mayor.  The Town Council recently authorized the start of construction, scheduled to begin in mid-February. The park will cover 1.57 acres and will have a pavillion structure, benches, special paving, a drinking fountain, lighting, landscaping and irrigation.  The following streets will bound the park: Morris, Ringo, Artist Way, and Goodman.
