Every dog  regardless of size, breed, age or coat type, needs to be groomed on a regular basis. There are an array of places in every community that caters to dog grooming, the important thing for you and your pet, is that it is a happy, comfortable place that both of you will enjoy.  I have tried out many and I have come back to my favorite Pet Smart on Peoples Street in Johnson City Tennessee.  The people that work there are pleasent and helpful.  Thay sincerely care for the animals and they work in the open.  Something nice about that.  You can watch them work on all the animals.  The dogs seem to enjoy their salon treatment , which in turn, makes the pet owner very happy.

We are in week 4 of the Johnson City 101 classes.  Last night was held at the fire hall #3 which is situated right next to the Police station (which was week#2).  They really had some great training for all of us.  I learned so much about how much training goes into being a fire fighter.  Their suits are pretty amazing as well.  We had a volunteer who got up there and put on the entire suit, and as she was being dresses, the fire chief was explaining each garment and the price of each piece.  Wow!  It cost's well over $2000.00, and I quit counting!  We also toured the hall, watched a presentation of firefighters repelling down walls, suiting up "speed style" , climbing through small boxes with wires obstructing views and breaking down doors.  It was a cool night!! (or should I say hot!).

I posted my video of this great home in Johnson City Tennessee on several of my social media outlets, including Facebook.  I was really surprised at the amount of hits I received on Facebook compared to all the other sites.  What I didn't realize untill recently ( I know it's elementary- but I just didn't get it), is that when someone clicks on your video stream from another site, it goes to You Tube and is another click for amount of times your video has been viewed.  Interesting. Facebook did a great service for me on this particular video.  I actually got two leads from it.  Are you using all your social media outlets? This home is 812 West Maple in Johnson City Tennessee.  It is located in the Tree Streets.  A great home for anyone looking in the Tree Streets for a home in Johnson C...

Re-connecting even after years is worth the effort.   I called Marcie last week to be sure I was remembering accurately a serendipity that involved her.  And to be sure she remembered as I did "who represented whom."    “We still love the house.”  “You should see what we’ve done with it.”   “The deep voice when you called wasn’t Bill’s.  That’s the kid who was a baby when we bought it.”   It’s always neat to connect with people we’ve not talked to in too long.      Marcie and Bill had been looking for a house in Silver Spring MD with a really big garage.  After we’d looked for a good while and hadn’t found the right combination of features,  I mentioned casually that I had friends with the perfect place - three-car garage with the house backing to parkland, but it wasn’t on the market. ...

Science Hill band in Johnson City Tennessee, is hosting a pancake breakfast Saturday at Texas Roadhouse on North Roan street across from the mall.  What a better way to start your day in Johnson City Tennessee.  The Science Hill Marching Band is an award winning marching band across the southeast, winning many competitions and making Johnson City proud.  They also have an amazing concert band as well, presenting a spring time concert coming up next month.  Arts in the Johnson City school system is an important part of their curriculum and Science Hill does an excellent job within this field.  The young people excell and learn many aspects of leadership and comraderie while learning the art of music.  Come visit the Science Hill band Saturday for breakfast, and I'll keep you updated on ...

Keep reading - this is really a real estate story, as well as another of my serendipities, one of two involving the National Geographic Magazine.    Remembering a lifetime of  National Geographic Magazines with my brother yesterday, I remembered a couple of serendipities that involved this magazine.   (I also remember the summer when mother kept me out of trouble by encouraging Pat Cooper and me to index a huge stash of them in our garage in Nacogdoches.)       Peter and Nancy were newly-weds and the budget was tiny.   The house could be tiny too, provided it was close to town.  They both wanted to be able to walk to restaurants and to be in a place their friends could find easily.    Her job was a fascinating one to me.   I had shelves of National Geographics going back many years an...

Browsing in various used bookstores in the Johnson City TN area, I have found a number of  Daily Guideposts  in which there is an entry for every single day of every month for the whole year – a note or a brief prayer.  The editors had given the blank spaces various captious through the years- “Blessings,”  “Thank you to God,” “Everyday Wonders,” etc.    Over a span of years,  from 1983 to 1995, apparently this person never missed a day.   Amazing, I thought.  There was a name in some of them, but the handwriting and the faithfulness of the notes made me certain that even the unsigned ones must have belonged to the same person.   I don’t have every year, but I have found at least nine. The last name was common in Johnson City so I didn’t expect I’d be able to track down this persistent ...

An elderly seller and a renovations contractor had an unexpected meshing of needs, in one of my many serendipities.  I remembered it recently because I am meeting other sellers who face challenges similar to hers.    A related post for people anticipating the challenge of down-sizing in stressful times is "Down-sizing the challenge of Down-Sizing."     Mrs. C. was nearly blind and very hard of hearing, and she had recently lost her husband.   She needed to sell the big old house.  It was in a lovely neighborhood and had lots of space, but it was full of years of stuff - some sentimental, some just not sorted through.    There were also a number of "delayed maintenance" things that would discourage  the first-time buyers likely to be looking in that area.    As I always do, I went throug...

The Mountain States Hospice Program needs more volunteers to serve  Washington, Sulllivan, Carter, and Greene Counties.   A new training program, like the one that got me involved, will be held on February  27-28, 8:30-12-30, at the hospice office, 101 Med Tech Park, Suite 100.  (This is just off Knob Creek across from People’s Drive).    I wholeheartedly recommend the training program and am glad that I decided to volunteer.   It has been a rewarding and interesting experience, and I  feel good about being able to be of some use to families needing some relief, help and comfort in difficult times.   I’m not a nurse, so I just read, visit, and do what I can to give family members some time to get away from home.   Others have different talents, and the needs, personalities and situation...

A useful guide to average lifespan of home systems is from Old House Web, which has a lot of interesting articles and ideas for people who live in, or who want to live in, older homes.     A building inspector will probably give you his estimate of useful life of various components, and this is a useful second-guess checklist.      I just discovered www.oldhouseweb.com and will  go back to it in the future.    It was chosen as one of the six best home-improvement sites in Forbes’ “Best of the Web” issue.  The Forbes review includes a description of some of the content that will bring old home owners (I mean, “owners of older homes” of course) back to www.oldhouseweb.com.   Forbes’ review says "Finally, an old-home site that doesn't dictate pristine restorations or presume unlimited budg...

Single family homes are often not exactly that these days,  at least not in the traditional sense of parents and children in one house, their parents in their own home or in some sort of senior living setting,  adult children starting out on their own after college, etc.     More often than not lately, several generations are living together for varying periods of time.    According to the U.S. Census Bureau, quoted in an article in New  Penn Financial newsletter, “from 2007 to 2011, the number of individuals aged 25 to 34 living at home increased by about 2 percent to 14.2 percent of all members of this demographic.”   Post-college financial struggles are often a factor, with often taking longer and graduating with enough debt often that buying their own place isn’t going to happen as ...

MILITARY DISCOUNTS - While there aren't nearly as many veterans (active, reserve and retired) in Northeast Tennessee as we had in Maryland when Mike taught at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and much of my business was from the military hospitals, this long list is bound to remind you that so many businesses offer miltiary discounts that you should always ask.   Feel free, of course, to send this to anyone who might benefit.  For help with any real estate need, including finding a good agent anywhere in the country, call or email me.   As an active blogger, I share ideas with many agents across the country.   This is a good example, and the blogging is a good way for me to give buyers information about this area and is another good way to publicize my listings.
