My Home vs The HouseMany sellers struggle with putting their homes on the market.  Homes are a personal thing.  Homes are where we live.  Where we retreat to after a long hard day.  Where our families met up each day to discuss their days and activities. …....SCREECH!  Stop those thoughts! As a seller of a home in Sumter, you need to think of this property as a HOUSE.  It is bricks, vinyl, mortar, sheet rock and flooring.  A HOUSE has less emotional attachment than a home.  As a Realtor, one of the first things I learned was a property is a HOUSE to the Seller and a HOME to the Buyer.  It is the emotional attachment that is the only difference.  So as a seller, you are now living a in HOUSE.  Realizing this helps leave the emotional attachment a little more distant.  This HOUSE is what ...

Sumter, SC has one of the most well developed cultural communities I've ever lived in, especially for a town this size.  There's always something to do, something to see.  Last Friday we participated in the annual Sip & Stroll, the first of three events in the 2010-2011 Sumter Winefest.  There were 13 participants downtown, offering samples of wines and nibbles, all thankfully provided by Market Place Spirits (the wines) and New Beginning Catering Service (the nibbles). Our offering was "California Trendy", which if you knew us personally you'd appreciate how ironic that is. I looked up the vintner's website, and found Kate and Cassie Wines. We had their Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend, and Chardonnay.   Some work had to be done to get the place ready. Yana and Betty got the greenery re...

Willard Farms is located just outside Sumter off highway 378 in Gables.  Willards is a family farm that produces fresh produce through the summer  and fall months and this fall has introduced a corn maze and pumpkin patch.  They do offer Community Supported Agriculture which allows families in the community to purchase vegetables that are delivered fresh on a weekly basis.   This was my first visit to Willard’s and wow!  It is a cool place!  They have many different options for activities.  With 20 month old Maddie with us, we opted for the hayride to the pumpkin patch and pumpkins for each of us.  The hayride was in a long wagon (no hay) with nice wooden sides along the sides.  The best part was the family works the farm.  We met one of the brothers who was driving the hay ride.  He ...

Tucked back in a city block among historical homes is a nice quiet park in the Historical District of Sumter, SC.  This park is almost a city block and is surround partially with a brick and iron fencing.  The park features a 1/3 mile walking trail around it and a large center walk way leading up to covered area.  Sure this has a name but not sure the proper name! There is a nice play area for the kids with a slide area for smaller tots and a larger triple slide for 5 to 12 year olds as the sign says, but I have seen an adult on there!  There are two sets of swings, one with child safety seats and the second with regular swings.  A large open area is great for playing frisbee or just letting the kids run.  The park also has two tennis courts! The best part of this park?  It sits under a...

When visiting a historical area, one may see these steps at the street and wonder. They are too low to be a bench.  Do they cover up something?  Why are they between the road and the sidewalk?  What is this thing just stuck out there on it’s own and they are usually directly between the road and the front door of the building. These are carriage steps and date back to horse drawn carriages.  The carriages sat high and these steps were designed so riders could exit carriages easily and gracefully.  I have seen many of them in Charleston, SC down on the peninsula, but today was the first day I realized we had them in Sumter still.  I was in the downtown area and within two blocks found several examples.  I will now be on the look out for carriage steps in Sumter.
