It is bounded on the north and east by the Kiawah River, on the west by Bohicket Creek, and the south by the North Edisto River. When British subject Lt. Col Robert Sanford arrived as an adventurer in 1666, the island was first recorded. Residents then sold their land to the newly arrived English settlers. In addition, the island took part in the American Revolutionary War. During the Siege of Charleston, it was a significant area since it served as a staging area for British and Hessian forces.
