The billboards all say, “change is on the way”. And the Magnolia project has just gotten a step closer to making that a reality. Charleston's Planning Commission on Wednesday approved the concept plan for Magnolia, a 216-acre development that aims to transform a polluted section of the Neck Area of Charleston into a mini-city with up to 4,400 homes. The eyes of the country were on Charleston Friday as thousands of mourners gathered from around the U.S. to honor the nine firemen who died in the line of duty Monday, June 18, at the Sofa Superstore in Charleston, South Carolina. The South Carolina Firefighters Association coordinated the memorial at the North Charleston Coliseum that lasted more than two hours. It was beautifully done, and I applaud them for all that they were able to accomplish in such a short period of time.The memorial drew more than 10,000 people, including firefighters from at least 700 agencies in the United States and Canada. Today is truly a very sad day for all Charlestonians.Charleston has been thrust in to the national spotlight again with a fire at the Sofa Super Store on Savannah Highway last night that has killed nine City of Charleston firefighters. Mayor Joe Riley said that it was the worst fire in his 30 years in office. In fact last night’s tragedy is the deadliest fire for firefighters since 9/11 according to the National Fire Protection AssociationAs many of you may know, my husband is a City of Charleston Firefighter and was there on the scene all night until early this morning. My husband was charged with the task of trying to locate the last two of his fallen comrades. One of the brave men lost was from his own Engine Company. Yesterday, June 14th, the residents of North Charleston headed to the polls to elect their mayor for the next four years. It was a victory for the incumbent, Keith Summey.  He has held the position since 1994, and is happy to continue leading his city for the next four years. His competition, Hillary Douglas, did give the mayor a run for his money.  Summey received 67% of the votes, while Douglas received the other 33%. Mayor Summey says, "It's an outstanding margin over a tough candidate. He ran a good campaign, but the people of North Charleston have spoken and we'll have to move along for another four years." Mayor Summey hopes the huge support will help him in meeting his goals for North Charleston in his upcoming term.

Today I was listening to the afternoon news, and I heard a story that I'm still having a hard time believing. They said that the remains of a leatherback sea turtle were found in the Brandymill subdivision in Summerville, SC.  The unbelievable part is that they claim that these remains are 30 million years old! I can't even fathom that length of time.  If they would have said 3000 or even 300,000 years, then I could see that.  But 30 million years is so much harder to wrap my head around. We have friends who actually just moved out of that subdivision.  If they were still there, I would have been on the phone to them to start digging up their backyard! So as of yesterday, June 1st, an extra 1% has been added to the state sales tax.  The South Carolina sales tax was 5%, so now we are up to 6%. The items that will not be affected by this increase are items with a set tax, like cars and boats, and groceries.  The grocery tax was lowered earlier this year to 3.5%, and is scheduled to be lowered even more later this year. But this increase is really not all that bad.  Why, you ask?  Because of what we will get in return.  South Carolinians have been fighting to have property taxes reduced or abolished for years and years.  The onset of this additional state sales tax is a preempt to just that.
