Aiken, South Carolinahas a rich history and one of her local legends claims that if you drink from Coker Spring you will return to Aiken again and again.  This was ccertainly true for me; I first visited Aiken as a wide eyed young girl, drank her waters and years later have returned. Time changes all things, and so it had changed me and the city that I love.  As growth and development began to gobble-up the countryside and eat away at the town; I realized there were measures that needed to be taken, battles to be fought in court and changes to zoning to protect her character.  And so my legacy begins, I am, along with many others, quoted in newspaper articles and on television clips that will stay Online for years.  The points and changes required to protect our quaint Downtown are on ...

Aiken, South Carolina is a small Southern Town with a lot of history.  One of my good friends, Louise, is in her early 90's and remembers a time when the streets were filled with big screen icons and tabloid headliners.  In the 1930's and 40's, The Aiken Post Office steps were the key to a fantasy world that gave way to an amazing reality. Mr Fred Astaire's first wife Phyllis Potter was accustomed to Wintering in Aiken and continued that habit while married, for 21 years, to America's dancing feet.  Whom Louise recalls, spun her up and down the post office steps as if she was as light as a feather.  His affinity for the charm of Aiken kept him returning even with his friends from the Ziegfeld Follies.  Mr Gene Kelly and Mr. Astaire created quite a stir when they both went to the Post O...

Aiken polo season will be here before we know it! I hope you are enjoying the series we have put together to get you ready.   We have covered a lot of ground so far :) Let's talk about the players for a minute. There are four players on a team. Each player has a position – designated by the number on his/her jersey. 1-2-3-4. Usually, (but not always!) the most experienced and highest rated players are at positions 2 and 3. The positions are flexible, and each player is prepared to make any play that benefits the team, changing position as necessary. It was a little complicated for me to try to explain the different positions, so I borrowed these descriptions from answers.com. I hope they don’t mind. I did add the football references to their descriptions, lol. • Position #1 is the most ...

Driving down Powderhouse Road over the weekend, I was quickly reminded that it was time for the Aiken Soccer Cup.   As I passed the historic polo field I couldn't help but notice all of the soccer goals lined up in preperation for the big event.  The tournament is played on over 30 fields!  Some of them will be at Citizens Park... the fields are laid out next to eachother so you can watch many teams at the same place. - - - there will also be fields laid out on the historic Aiken Polo fields.(the older players will play there)  These fields are awesome! - We take our polo seriously here in Aiken, and the polo fields are groomed weekly!  It will be an exciting weekend for soccer fans.    Check it out:                                                                                        ...

Check it out!  Quite a system they have going for them.  Very fair to everyone.  Judged solely on skill and not by how rich they are - or how they are dressed - or what kind of car they are driving - or by how many books they have read - or by who they know - or who they don't know - or where they live....  Judged solely on skill. Polo Player Handicap Ratings: Polo Players are rated yearly by their peers in the United States Polo Association (USPA) on a scale of -2 to 10 goals.   (yes - that is a NEGATIVE 2).    So when you hear that a players handicap is 0, it is a bigger deal than it sounds, lol.                                                              All players, male and female, are rated under the SAME handicap system. The term "goal" does not refer to how many goals the play...

POLO 101: A series! (AKA:  Polo:  So much to learn, So little time!)   Provided together by Kara Casamassina and Gene Mock, The Carolina Real Estate Company, Aiken SC.   Throw-In, Roll-In... Play ball!  At the start of play, the umpire rolls in the ball.   (there is a roll-in to resume play after a time out, as well) Each team lines up (in numerical order {1-2-3-4}) directly behind the other.   The opposing team lines up the same way - and the umpire rolls the ball between the two teams, and play begins.                                                                                                 The Object of The Game:  In polo (as with other sports involving a ball), the object is to move the ball downfield by hitting the ball through the goal posts for a score.  Polo teams then cha...

These are the things I love about Aiken, SC The Sunsets - When I first moved to the Aiken area, one of the first things I noticed was that Aiken had the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen.  I don't know if it is the lack of pollution, or the amount of wide open spaces, but I do know that the sky turns the most amazing colors that I have ever seen .  When I take a few moments and sit and enjoy this spectacular view at the end of a busy day, I feel amazement, wonderment and a sense of thankfulness.  The Downtown Area-  with great specialty shops, a variety of eateries from sandwich shops(I love the Stop Light Deli)  to fine dining restaurants(sitting outside in the alley under the weeping willow tree at The Bowery), antique shops,  the fountains, and the beautiful parkways.  The Aiken...

Every sport has its ‘timed periods'.    Football has quarters.....baseball has innings....  Polo is no different. -  it has 'timed periods', too - and they are called: Chukkers.   (sounds like plucker...but with a ‘ch' ) Here's the deal: A polo match lasts about an hour and a half - and is played in 6 chukkers. Each chukker is 7 minutes long.  (a bell rings to indicate 30 seconds left - - -and then a horn sounds to end the chukker.)                                                   There is a 3 minute break between chukkers.  If you watch the players during the break you will see they are just like any other athlete.  Off come the helmets - sweaty brows get wiped -  down goes the water/Gatorade - equipment is checked over - strategy discussed -  a new horse is mounted...and off they go!...

Do you know?  I know!!  I know!!  This is a great little piece of trivia for EVERYONE!!  There are alot of sports in the world using very large playing fields.  A baseball field is pretty big.    What about  Soccer -Field Hockey -  Rugby???   What about Lacrosse?............  (A Lacrosse field is 110' long by 60' wide)By now you are thinking - come on, Kara - we know it is a football field!  Is that what you are thinking??  That it must be a football field?  Well, a football field is 360' long by 160' wide.If you haven't guessed by now - I'll fill you in.   Did you know?...... that a polo field is the largest playing field in all sports.    Well, think about it - with all those horses out there it has to be big.  Two teams with four players each  (and all on horseback) - - PLUS two refe...
