I prefer the word "hot dog," yet the chef behind the counter insisted on using the word "wiener" when ordering. If you are looking to taste the Best Rhode Island Wieners (or Hot dogs) you NEED to visit Olneyville New York System in either Cranston or Providence. I love restaurants that honor the historic value of it's interior and match that with "old time recipes" and great service. We ordered a cheese burger deluxe, the wiener special with everything on it and good ol' fashioned grilled cheese. YUM!! The prices are also very reasonable and the meal you receive is filling (do not be fooled). Breif History:In the 1920′s, Nicholas Stevens and his father Anthony emigrated to the United States from Greece and settled in Brooklyn, New York where they operated a candy shop. In the late 1930′...

Avoid These Seller Mistakes   You want to get the best price for your home, plus sell it in the least amount of time. In a buyers’ market such as the one emerging now, homes will take longer to sell. Therefore, it’s important that you make the right moves at the very beginning of your home selling process to remain competitive. Here are some common traps that many homeowners fall into and how to avoid them.  1. Over-pricing — It’s easy to think your home is worth more than the current market may support, particularly after the long run-up in home prices. Since home prices have cooled in markets around the country, home sellers must be prepared to negotiate on price and terms, and stay flexible to other stipulations benefiting the buyer. Sellers must also keep their emotions in check du...

Nola, my best friend Dawn's 13 month old daughter, is just about the happiest, most darling little thing when left to her own devices. She was in top form yesterday when Dawn came over to help me with the landscaping at Bluff. Problem was that "her own devices" meant crawling around through plaster-dusted rooms and splintered floors. So I got "Nola" duty, while Dawn began doing battle with the horrendously overgrown hedges in the front yard. We spent the afternoon walking up and down the porch stairs, Nola's hands in mine to keep her from touching anything. Surprisingly not boring. Shocking to some may be the fact that I occasionally enjoy spending time with little ones. At least when they eventually go back to their parents. I would be an awesome grandmother. If only I could skip the "...

Day One. When I first walked onto the porch of the Bluff Avenue house, I almost fell through the dilapidated floorboards. "It's perfect," I shrieked excitedly. And it was. Maybe, disguised by peeling wallpaper and years of neglect, it wasn't obvious to anyone else, but it was obvious to me. Three months later, here I am. Restoration Project Manager Day I. My first project where I actually get to have a final say in things. Probably a little concerning to those who know my tendencies towards the ornate and over-the-top. Finally a chance to prove that I can make a property fabulous while retaining affordability and universal appeal. Challenge accepted. My first step toward achieving my objective was of course to run to Staples and spend nearly two hundred dollars on a fancy new binder, cl...

' Located at the point where the Pawtuxet River flows into Narragansett Bay is a section of both Warwick and Cranston, Rhode Island is an area called Pawtuxet Village. PAWTUXET  (a river and village means "Little Falls" in the native language,  the Sononoce Pawtuxet tribe, part of the larger from Narragansett Indian nation, who used the area as a feasting ground Pawtuxet Cove, and originally occupied this area. Pawtuxet Cove, called Fiddlers Rest, meaning the resting place of ships, was a good harbor. The water was deep and Pawtuxet Neck made good protection for vessels. In 1636 Roger Williams received his grant of land from the Indians.  There is a marker at the Cranston end of Pawtuxet Bridge. The Village of Pawtuxet is historic in that its the oldest village in New England and is...

As a member of the Community Outreach Committee at Williams & Stuart Real Estate,  I've been asked to spearhead a blood drive that will benefit the Rhode Island Blood Center. I'm humbled to be associated with such a noble cause and the fact that I get to represent Williams and Stuart and all my amazing colleagues is truly an honor for me. As a monthly pherisis donor myself, I know exactly what it takes to keep the people in need supplied.   If you stop and think for a moment, donating blood is the basis for all other charity work. Without the blood supply and generous donations from everyday people like you, our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters would not survive if faced with needing a transfusion. Children of all ages suffering from any number of diseases count ...

If you've ever lived in Rhode Island, chances are you've been to or at least heard of Twin Oaks Restaurant in Cranston. The Oaks has been around since 1933, with its speakeasy roots running back to 1928. William DeAngelus Sr opened his home to friends in '33 after Federal Agents destroyed his still. The original Twin Oaks consisted of two small dining rooms and one larger function room. Today in its current location, the restaurant seats close to 650 people in six dining rooms - not to mention the beautiful outdoor deck overlooking Spectacle Pond. Melissa and I went for a late lunch/early dinner sort of thing last week. Earlier that morning I had seen Joe Zito, "The TV Maitre d'" eating out on the deck. He was enjoying a massive pile of the most succulent lobster salad anywhere in the ...
