And so it was this Sunday, when my son was visiting from Tokyo. It was a nice, sunny day, and Doug is a big train buff, so off we drove one hour away to Strasburg in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Every year over 800,000 people come to Lancaster county, PA and visit Sight and Sound Theatre. Sight and Sound is a 2,000 seat theater with a 300 foot long stage and amazing sets.      I'm excited for the return of the Strasburg Sertoma Club's weekly Farmers Market again this summer. The market is set up at the Strasburg Boro office, 145 Precision Ave. every Saturday until the end of September. Additionally starting June 7th, the market will be open every Tuesday from 4pm. til dusk.      Twenty vendors will bring fresh produce,eggs,meat cheese, homemade root beer, meadow tea and several apparel/goods. Additionally you can purchase various prepared hot foods made by Amish folk. Also on Tuesday's customers can purchase dinner ready items on their way home from work .      I can't wait to start my weekly trek to purchase some of the best locally grown produce in the country.      The boro of Strasburg is located SE of Lancaster City with it's Main St. being located on Rt.741. On Saturday Dec.4th, I'll be joining hundreds of other house and history buffs on the Strasburg Heritage Society's Holiday Tour of Homes. The tour will feature 9 homes(six are 100-200 years old) and 3 churches. The oldest home was built in the 1770's and one is log . All of the homes will be decorated in their holiday finest. The Heritage Society will be selling decorated wreaths and natural holiday trimmings to help support the preservation efforts in historic Strasburg. Strasburg, Pennsylvania is, to me, one of the most beautiful parts of the country. The rolling hills and the laid back people make it a great place to visit and an even more wonderful place to live. Having lived my whole life in Strasburg, I think I have at least a little idea of what's fun to see in Strasburg. Did you know that we have our very own railroad line right here in Lancaster County, PA? Strasburg, PA is home to one of the most comprehensive railroad experiences in the nation.  There is the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum, with many historic locomotives and railroad cars on display at their facility along Route 741 just east of Strasburg.  Right next door is the Strasburg Rail Road, an actual operating "short line" railroad. Strasburg Railroad operates one of the oldest "short line" railroads in the region, dating back to 1832.  The current four and a half mile run is part of the original Strasburg Rail Road that served the Pennsylvania Railroad as a freight interchange.  The line was saved from destruction in 1958 and placed in service as a memorial to the bygone era of rail travel. If you are a collector, operator or admirer of toy trains, the biggest network of like-minded enthusiasts is the Train Collectors of America, or TCA.  And for myself and thousands of other toy train fans, the biggest event is the twice-annual TCA Eastern Division Train Meet, held at the York, PA Fairgrounds.The Eastern Division York Train Meet is considered the Mecca of all train meets.  It's the largest and finest toy train show in the world.The meet runs Thursday through Sunday every October and April.  It's been running every year since 1954, and every year gets a little larger.  This year over 14,000 TCA members were in attendance, including me!  Unfortunately, the meet is open to members only.  You must be sponsored by a TCA member to become a member, but the TCA is open to familie... 10/25/2007

In 1693 French fur trader Pierre Bezaillion settled in an area just east of what is now Lancaster City.  His intent was to trade with the Delaware Indians.  More French settlers followed, and in the mid 1700's named the town Strasburg, after their home city in France, Strasbourg (I've been there).  Interesting that the town can trace its roots to French influence amidst the Amish German culture that pervades the area! Strasburg's "golden era" came in the second half of the 18th century when it became a stop for the Conestoga wagons headed west into the wilderness of central PA.  After Lancaster City's rise to prominence, Strasburg remained important with the advent of the railroad and the Strasburg RR exists to this day, even thought the town itself never became a major stop on the rout... 05/23/2007
