To keep your pet safe and secure during home renovations, Blog Remodeler passes along these helpful hints:  First, if you've decided to hire workers to renovate your home, you'll need to consider your pet's reaction. If your pet tends to be overly protective of your home and family, you should take the time to introduce it to the workers. A major aspect of home renovation that is sometimes difficult for pets is the loud noises that almost always comes with work on your home. The best thing to do is to place your pet in a smaller space (such as a laundry room or office) with its bed, a comforting blanket, and a few of its favorite toys. Because the safety of your family and pets are of the highest priority, be sure to be on the lookout for hazards once the workers go home. Things that co...

Home offices present a few challenges when it comes to being eco-friendly, mainly relating to energy and paper. Jennifer Roberts, the author of Good Green Homes, has come up with a few simple ways to save trees, conserve energy, and reduce the carbon footprint of your home office. Here are her seven tips, which were posted on This Old House: 1. Reduce paper use. Print only the emails and documents that you really need, and make double-sided printouts when possible. Subscribe to digital newsletters, opt out of paper billing, and register for online banking. "If you need to transmit a signed document, scan and email it instead of printing and faxing it," says Roberts. 2. Reuse paper. Hold onto one-sided printouts and use them as notepaper. If you subscribe to magazines or printed newslett...

Looking for your first home is a new experience, so of course you're going to make mistakes (maybe even lots of them!). House hunting can be fun, but here are 3 of the most common mistakes that will surely kill your enthusiasm and make your search seem like it will never end: #1 - Searching for the perfect house    There is no such thing as the perfect house. Every home you look at will have its positives and negatives. Often homebuyers think that, if they search long enough, the perfect property will come along. There are always things that people change to make a house a home. You need to look past how it currently looks and see the home as it can become. It is what you make of it that makes it perfect. #2 - Having a scope that's too wide Too many choices can be confusing. You really ...

There are some great benefits to living closer to downtown - proximity to food, entertainment and shopping, as well as access to the amazing cultural scene. There are also wonderful aspects of living in the suburbs, like owning a bit more land and having a larger house as well as enjoying community pools and having barbecues in the cul-de-sac. Some people want to live downtown because they can walk to everything. But keep in mind there are suburbs that also are considered to be very "walkable." If you're looking for a house where you don't have to get in your car every time you want a gallon of milk, then check out Walk Score.  You enter an address or zip code, and it finds the distance to the nearest grocery stores, post offices, restaurants, libraries, movie theaters and other useful ...

This house on the South Side has been beautifully renovated on the inside, but would the exterior paint color keep you from seeing it? There are many factors involved in marketing and selling your home, and you can't control most of them. But the curb appeal of your home plays a big role, and it's one of the things you can have direct control over.  You'll never get another chance to make a first impression of how your home looks from the street. If your home exterior needs new paint, or you made a poor color choice, potential buyers might not even get out of their car to come in and look. Color can certainly make your house stand out in a crowd, but neutral colors appeal more to the masses and can give you better resale value. If you need a dramatic touch to make your house memorable, ...

It's no surprise to those of us living here, but Pittsburgh has been recognized as a Real Estate Most-Livable Bargain Market.  This is based on MSN Real Estate's 2008 list of the nine best, livable cities where you won't need to trade the good life for the boring. Pittsburgh has shaken off its steel-town image to be an attractive and desirable location for families and retirees. In addition to housing many major corporations, it is home to Duquesne and Carnegie Mellon universities. The employment picture is solid, but not as robust as some of the other picks on this list. It's easy to afford a home here and there are more than 90 recognized neighborhoods to choose from, each with a unique identity and personality. Steep hills rise on all sides of town, with some of these neighborhoods a...

Not a week goes by where I do not meet someone from the Pittsburgh area!  Steeler fans abound down here in beautiful Greenville, SC, just voted 4th best place in the country to relocate and live.  I spent my first 50 years of life in the Pittsburgh area - South Park to be specific.  We moved here last year and truly love the area and the people.  If you  or anyone you know are planning a move here, please let me know!  I would love to help you find a great home (with very low taxes here) and show you all the highlights of this great area.  We are just an hour from the mountains, a couple of hours from the beach and centrally located between Charlotte and Atlanta.

So often we only have time to see an airport, taxi and hotel in different cities, so Tami and I took an extra day and came to Pittsburgh yesterday.  Meetings will be held at the Sheraton Station Square, just across the river from downtown. This was the view from our window this morning. The day was sunny and mild, perfect for our leisure day here. This morning the free hotel shuttle took us over to  Carnegie Science Center where we saw the exhibit BODIES. It was a great exhibit and we spent a couple of hours there, learning a lot.Back to Station Square for lunch at Bar Louie, where we ate outside overlooking the Mon.After that we joined some of the other CyberProfessionals on the Duck Tour - great way to see both the city, from land and from sea. Our guide is just graduating as a theater ...

Tips for Selling Your Home in PittsburghThere are numerous articles and blogs available for home sellers that deal with how to prepare a home for sale.  So, why am I diving into the fray? The answer is that this aspect of the home sale is so important that it never hurts to remind sellers.  We are in a very competitive market right now and anything you can do to give your home an edge in this market will certainly benefit you in the long run. Here are my tips for a quicker home sale:1.  Pre-inspection - Probably the number one deal-killer is the home inspection.  With a lot of homes to choose from, buyers are not shy about walking away from a deal if they don't like what they see in a home inspection report.  A pre-inspection will alert the seller to any problems.  Regardless of how long ...

Buying Foreclosures in the Pittsburgh AreaPART 3 OF 3 - FORECLOSURE PRICINGIn this final part of the series on buying foreclosures, I'd like to discuss the topic of how foreclosures are priced.  Some people are under the impression that you can buy a foreclosure for pennies on the dollar.  This is very rarely the case and usually leads to wasted time and effort and disappointment for buyers.Lenders will price a foreclosure based on a number of factors.  These include the money owed on the mortgage and any other outstanding liens such as mechanic's liens or unpaid property taxes.  The lender has other expenses as well, such as legal fees as part of the foreclosure process, clearing the property of debris, and the cost to market the property.  According to Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan M...

Buying Foreclosures in the Pittsburgh AreaPart 1 of 3Purchasing a foreclosed property has become an attractive alternative to buyers now that money is tight and the number of foreclosures has increased.  Seasoned investors know how the process works; people who are new to this and purchasing a home as their primary residence - especially for the first time - or buyers who are considering getting into investing, may not be quite as savvy.  The purpose of this series of articles is to help buyers make an informed decision as to whether or not a foreclosure is the right choice for them.  The topics I'll be covering include:Part 1 - ConditionPart 2 - Buyer costsPart 3 - PricingThese articles are not intended to be exhaustive of the subject matter but to give a general overview and they addr...

is a pejorative term used to describe practices of some lenders. There are no legal definitions in the United States of predatory lending, though there are laws against many of the specific practices commonly identified as predatory, and various federal agencies use the term as a catch-all term for many specific illegal activities in the loan industry. One less contentious definition of the term is "the practice of a lender deceptively convincing borrowers to agree to unfair and abusive loan terms, or systematically violating those terms in ways that make it difficult for the borrower to defend against."[1] Other types of lending sometimes also referred to as predatory include payday loans, credit cards or other forms of consumer debt, and overdraft loans, when the interest rates are co...
