Independence National Park, home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were signed), is located in Philadephia. A visit to the park is a great day trip (I prefer a weekend which has more parking options), but there are many other historic (tours, buildings and homes, such as the Betsy Ross House), cultural (exhibits, shows, theater, art, sports) and educational (museums, zoo, dinasaur exibit) places to see and events to experience that require a longer stay or more follow up visits. Many of the local hotels offer special weekend getaway packages. Here are some links to help in getting the most out of your trip to Historic Philadelphia:Independence National ParkIndependence Visitors CenterPhiladelphia Vacation and Travel Pl...

Philadelphia is laid out in a basic grid pattern. The commercial, historic, and cultural center is 24 blocks long—stretching from the Delaware River on the east to the Schuylkill on the west and 12 blocks wide from Vine Street on the north to South Street. Philly 's transportation is readily accessible and enables someone  to travel to and from Philly with ease. It also allows  those that live in the city or those that visit,  very  dependable  means of  transportation within the city limits. Don't let this picture scare you in regards to your kids going to college. This just happens to be a clasic when it comes to movies, Animal House , in 1978. But Philadelphia has some of the best Colleges and Universities in the Northeast Region. The University of Pennsylvania, once known as The Academy of Pennsylvania, was founded in 1749. Making it the oldest school in the Philadelphia area. There is some disagreement about Penn's date of founding because of a certain log found at Princeton University. But because of the uncertainties surrounding this, there is some connection between this school and the College of New Jersey that would enable Princeton to claim a founding date of 1726. But Princeton does not officially do so and a Princeton historian says that the "facts do not warran...

I would like to start off with a Philadelphia tradition at first. Am I keeping you in suspense? Take a guess....  Philadelphia is so rich in tradition in so many areas, it's hard to keep track of everything that this city of 'Brotherly Love' has to offer. And what I am about to talk about has no certain category or classification. It could easily have gone under Part 2 which was historic sites and the history of Philly. It could also have gone under Part 3 which mentioned the Arts of Philly. The Mummers Parade, which finds its roots dating to pre-colonial times, resulted from a blend of Northern European, British and African American heritages.Informal merrymaking and customs, which can be traced back to 1642, forty years prior to William Penn's arrival were incorporated into the Parade ...

Museums & The Arts of Philadelphia:The art museums of Philadelphia offer a fascinating alternative to the well-known institutions of New York and Washington. In fact very few North American cities offer as rich and exciting an opportunity to view the full range and quality of American and European and world art as does Philadelphia.     Picture on the right:Philadelphia Museum of Art-- Where Rocky ran up the steps. Philadelphia is one of the most historically important cities on the U.S.A. It was settled in the 1640s by the Swedes. In 1681, Charles II of England granted land to William Penn in what is now Pennsylvania. Penn chose Philadelphia as the capital of Pennsylvania in 1682 (which it remained until 1799), optimistically naming it after the Greek for 'brotherly love.'William Penn>>>>>>Although the Revolutionary fighting originated in the Boston area, Philadelphia became the center of political activities. The First Continental Congress met here in 1774. The Declaration of Independence was drafted in Philadelphia in 1776. During the Revolution, Philadelphia acted as the capital. The Constitution was also drafted in Philadelphia, 1787. The first presidents George Washington and John Adams gove...

This blog is one of many blogs about Philadelphia. Here is the previous blog: The City of Brotherly Love: The Introduction of Philadelphia & what the city has to offer.....   Many of us know that the City of Philadelphia is a Football town. Sure, it's won a few of Lord Stanley's Cups (the trophy to the team that wins the championship in hockey), but it will always be a football city because of its blue collar workers and because of WIP, the sports radio talk show. But there is so much that surrounds this wonderful city with lots of history in regards to its sports and those players that were on these teams.            Philly Phanatic (baseball)>>> The Philadelphia Eagles first came into the league in 1924 as the Frankford Yellowjackets. But in 1933 after a 1 year absence, the Philadelph...
