A Day with Mother Mother is eighty-seven years young.  She still lives in her own home and has begun to plant her 61st garden.  The produce and flowers that come from her garden amaze family and friends.  Mother's Flowers (2009)   I had the privledge to spend a day with Mother recently. After I helped her balance her checkbook and fill out a few insurance forms we had lunch at her favorite restuarant, Spill the Beans, along the banks of the Allegheny River.  Unfortunately the weather was not warm enough to eat outside as we had last summer.  HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY       05/09/2010

A recent visit to see Mother in my home town of Oil City, Pennsylvania gave me a sought after opportunity to take this photo of the hillside where I grew up and St. Joseph Church, the focal point of my youth.   St. Joseph ChurchOil City, PA Cradled in the foothills of the Allegheny mountains, Oil City is defined by hills and atop one is St. Joseph Church.  Really this is only halfway up the hill, but time did not allow more picture taking.  My childhood home, 62 Pearl Avenue, is just down the street from the church and the grade school was around the corner.  At one time I knew everyone who lived on our block, all 50+ kids, most of whom went to the same church and school.  In fact I don't think I knew the name of anyone who did not go to St. Joe's, as it was affectionately called.  Smal... 01/14/2010

Visiting my aging mother has become a monthly routine.  Fortunately she only lives an hour and half away.  What at first was part obligation & necessity is now an opportunity to revist my growing up years as well as renew our mother/daughter bond.  I loved the front porch and spent many days & evenings there. Notice the flowers hanging near the bush.  My mother grows the most beautiful flowers.  Each trip from spring to fall I take a bouquet back to Erie with me.  I have transplanted a few bushes in my own yard, but my trees & flowers don't get along very well. Someday I will miss both the visits and her flowers.  During some of my visits we go through the rooms 'looking for treasures'  as she tells me what to do with this or that when the time comes . . .
