Fledgling In The Vegetable Garden Yesterday I noticed an adult Grackle hanging around the bird feeder in our yard.  Grackles generally do not feed at my feeder, so this got my attention. This adult black iridescent bird with yellow eyes was staying around and calling here and there.  Then I noticed a black bird on the ground amongst the growing vegetables in my garden.  So this is why the Grackle was around...its baby had taken flight not too long ago and was now a fledgling: not quite able to fly and vulnerable to harm on the ground.   This adult Grackle was calling out, talking to its baby, guiding it with its calls, telling it to stay put or to move for cover under vegetation in the garden.  I also noticed mom/dad flew away in search for food.  Returning a short while later and again... 06/07/2015

Happy Earth Day 2015Today is Earth Day and it is windy and raining off and on as I write here in SE PA. For some people Earth Day has become a day to celebrate the Earth and to do group work projects cleaning up outdoors, planting trees, removing non native invasive plants....you name it people just want to be part of the celebration of our one and only home, Earth.  To others it is just another day.To those of you who do service to honor this day and Earth, I thank you! The Nobscussett Tribe The First To Feed The Mayflower Pilgrims A few years ago we vacationed in Cape Cod in December and as with all of our vacations we traveled around the area and took in the sights in order to appreciate the area more.  On one of these outings we came upon a sign for the "Burial Grounds Of The Nosbscussett Tribe Of Indians" in the town of Dennis.  We stopped and I ventured on the overgrown path off the road to the burial ground.  This sacred ground was overlooking a body of water and appeared to be maintained and had recent visits from people leaving offerings of sea shells and garlands for the Christmas season. The only sign at the burial ground simply stated, "Burial Ground of the Nosbscussett Tribe of Indians of which tribe Mashantanpaine Was Chief".  It was a pea... 11/27/2014

Those Autumn Leaves....Bag 'Em or Mulch 'Em? It is that time of year when deciduous trees have pretty much finished their colorful autumn display by dropping their leaves to the ground leaving a blanket of leaves to be dealt with by homeowners. Now we know how fun it is to rake leaves into piles in order to let children and dogs have fun in the piles, but once the fun is over those leaves need to be removed from our yards. So how do you remove the leaves from your property?  Do you rake them to the curb or bag them for curbside pickup from your municipality?  Or do you use a lawn mower to mulch the leaves? A few years back we acquired  a lawn mower with a mulching device and I have to tell you we enjoy that machine! Yes there is a little raking that is involved in getting the leaves in ... 11/18/2014

November 15th National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day Today is November 15th falls and if you are inspired, take time to clean out your refrigerator on the National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day!  The timing of this "Day" is well planned before the upcoming holidays. Maybe you have some forgotten leftovers hidden way back in those bottom shelves that have taken on a life of their own closed away in a little container. Lucy The Elephant Recently we took a day ride along the Jersey shoreline to visit Lucy The Elephant in Margate, New Jersey.  She stands day in and day out looking at the ocean and welcoming visitors to take pictures of her as well as pictures from the vantage points on top of her. Lucy is a magnificent wooden structure built back in the late 1800's as a marketing tool to attract buyers of local real estate within eye shot of Lucy's view.  She was actually built a few blocks north but moved to city land to ensure she was not torn down by a private party.  She had a major face lift thanks to the efforts of a kind woman and many others who thought Lucy was worth saving from the wrecking ball.  Lucy is a National Historical Landmark.   If you are ever at the Jersey Shore and have never seen... 10/06/2014
