In addition to the tastes and pleasures of an event like this (the music, the dancing, the food and the wine) is the opportunity to see a lot of people and, of course, people watch.  The Wine Festival attracted about 12,000 on Saturday and about 4-5,000 on a partially rainy Sunday.  For an area like Lake Harmony, other than one of the two NASCAR weekends. that's a lot of people (it swells the local population by about 10 times! - of course NASCAR races bulge it by 100 times!!).  Here are some crowd shots or faces in the crowd shots, so to speak, from a wonderful weekend in June (and fortunately held every year right here in Split Rock)                                       :                                            As you can see there are many people at the Wine & Food Festival, they...

18th Annual Great Tastes of Pennsylvania Wine and Food Festival    The Resort at Split Rock held its 18th Annual Wine Festival this weekend.  There were an estimated 12,000 people in attendance on Saturday and an estimated 4-5,000 on Sunday (which had a few passing showers thrown in to dampen the crowd, no pun intended).  Wineries from all over the state (31 of them) had booths set up for tastings and bottle/case sales (for picnic area consumption immediately or to be picked up as you left).  Here a few of the 16 tasting tents:        There were also about 80 vendors there selling everything from cigars; to birdhouses; to arts and crafts items; to pottery; to glassware; to wine related gadgets, clothes and paraphernalia; to food of all descriptions; specialty food stuffs (like hot sauce...

The new indoor water park at The Resort at Split Rock continues to move toward completion which is set for Fall 2008. Seems that the name will be H2O..oooh.  The new entrance has been connected to the existing Galleria building as seen here below and the building enclosed.               The slide tower is enclosed now and the internal equipment is starting to makes its way indoors as well             The opening should be a gala event for the Resort and the area.  I am still trying to be the first one down a slide but know full well that this is an impossible request,  I sure plan to be there on opening day and be one of the first day's sliders for sure.

The first Annual Banquet to honor local area Volunteer Firefighters as well as the Rescue Squad & Ambulance Corps was held at the Galleria at Split Rock last Saturday evening.  It was well attended by residents and the attendees included Pa State Representative Keith McCall.  After a cocktail hour dinner, awards presentations and dancing followed.  The event was well supported by local businesses via door prize donations, an ad book, and reduced rates for the venue and food.  A good time was had by all and it was an inspiring evening to boot. The evening was set up as a chance for residents and the community to thank the brave men and women who volunteer their time to do a dangerous job which the Township would be hard-pressed to provide via tax revenues.  This is a very serious issue i...

The 365 day a year indoor water park being erected at The Resort at Split Rock is moving along at pace.  I will take some photos and post them next week.  The three tubes which the leave the building and return are the water slides and alreday installed in all of the very noticable primary colors of Yellow, Red and Blue (geared i suppose toward the expected child-like audience for such a facility).  The largest of these tubes (the Yellow) will hold four people at at time to go down the chute in a rubber raft/tube.  With added interior pools, play areas and an interactive water system the facility should be a fun place to spend time when you are not engaged in the many other area activities like skiing, golfing, tennis, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, etc.

Seems as if at least one new casino may be coming to the Pocono Mountain area.  The next round of license hearings were held in May.  There are only three applicants for the two Resort or Class 3 licenses available.  The three are Fernwood Resort in Monroe County, The Resort at Split Rock in Carbon County and the Valley Forge Convention Center.  The license would allow the successful applicants to have a facility with up to 500 slot machines (as opposed to the up to 5,000 permitted in the other two types of licenses). At the May hearing held at the Kidder Township Building on the Split Rock application, the gist of the Resort's presentation was to show who and what they are, how they already comply with the stated requirements for such a license and the added revenue it would bring to th...

At the top end of this photo is The Resort at Split Rock.  The pictures below show that long established four season resort on Lake Harmony.  Originaly built and owned by Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co, the Lodge was a vacation get-away for hunting and fishing for their executives but quickly eveolved into a public facility.  The first picture below shows the Lodge from the swimming/dock area. The picture below is a panoramic shot of Lake Harmony from the docks at Split Rock.  From this viewpoint you are looking toward the bottom of the photo in the aerial view above. We are digging up some more old photos of the area and will psot them later.

Lake Harmony was frozen over for most of  the winter. This was just prior to starting to thaw.  taken at the "spilway" end of the lake (where it "flows" into the Tunhkannock and tobyhanna Creeks Watershed) Ice fishing is a popular sport here when the conditions are right (which is most winters)Someone hoping for Spring/Summer and th ewarmer weather.  Maybe the ice with the fishing then will be with a cold drink rather than fishing through the ice.

The above picture was taken from the southeastern end of the Lake.  THe Resort at Split Rock is located at the top of this picture.  Lake Harmony, the largets natural lake in the Pocono Mountains of Pa, is a 125 acre spring fed lake which permits power boats(with proper registration, boat tags, identification, and insurance) for area property owners to fish, water ski and enjoy the outdoors.  It has been a popular vacationing area since before WWII and has evolved from a fishing/hunting/summers oriented venue into a four seasons resort area with a growing full-time residence population.Split Rock is located on the NW end of Lake Harmony.  The views above were taken from our Split Rock Neighborhood website.  They show, clockwise from upper left:  The entrance to Split Rock Cpuntry Club, ...

Lake Harmony is about 125 acres in size and while that is small, it is the largest natural lake in the Pocono Mountains.  It is a spring fed lake, with over flow going into the Tobyhanna Creek .and Tunkhannock Creek Watershed.  It is about 15 feet deep at the moment (it has been deeper but storm water runoff is having its impacts).  A local group, Lake Harmony Concerned Citizens have been actively monitoring, measuring and treating the lake for some time now.  It is improving in condition and only stands to return to its full glory with continued agressive control of what goes into it.   The above views of Lake Harmony are taken from our Neighborhood Website.  Clockwise starting upper left they show: the docks at Nick's Lake House (our pontoon boat is the one with red roof on the end, t...
