Congratulations to the Kennett Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS Inc.) for their always fun presentation and Tenth Anniversary performance of a pantomime tradition dating back to 1814. This last weekend, Dick Whittington and His Cat continued a British tradition deriving from several sources, including Commedia dell'Arte, Harliquinades, Slapstick, and Music Hall (vaudeville) skits.                        Presented traditionally in the post-Christmas period, this presentation follows the tradition of several standard parts: a young male lead (the "principal boy") played by a girl, the cross-dressing role of the Dame, an animal (in this case, a cat), a nasty villain, villagers, and a plot line from a fairy story or folk tale. There is a silly song (sung by cast and audience), daft children...

Kennett Square residents may see tax increase Property owners in Kennett Square will be paying an average of $116 more in taxes next year if council adopts the 2011 budget as presented Monday night. The budget includes a 3 percent increase for all uniformed and non-uniformed employees in the borough, as well as a 3 percent increase in water, sewer and solid waste fees. The millage rate in Kennett Square stands at 3.85 mills. One mill generates approximately $220,000 for the borough. The budget calls for a 10 percent increase in health insurance co-pays, plus a higher deductible health insurance plan. All capital outlay has been removed from the budget except for the purchase of a loader to perform tasks like snow removal and debris cleanup. The only option to avoid a tax hike is to red...

We knew it all along as Kennett Square just keeps getting better and better. Maybe because Matt Fetick is now mayor. The Borough officially is now  one of America's coolest small towns for 2010. The September issue of Budget Travel includes Chester County's Kennett Square on its annual Top 10 list. It chats up  the town's homey, tradition-friendly image, with mentions of Sinclair's Sunrise Cafe & Tea Room; Burton's Barber Shop, family-owned for 118 years; the "quirky" Mushroom Cap gift shop; and fine dining at Talula's Table. In April, Matt Fetick my team leader and mayor, encouraged by a No. 21 ranking last year, supported a vote drive that included a link to ballots from the borough's website. Only towns with 10,000 or fewer residents are eligibl jroosevelt@kw.com

Kennett Square has recently approved a ban on dogs at all Kennett Square events, with the exception of service-type animals. There has been an "unwritten rule" up until this point, but the key word there was "unwritten". There was no official ordinance, thus no way to enforce it. Officials do have some valid points. You wouldn't be able to take your pet into Disneyland or Six Flags unless he or she was a service dog.  The main focus here is the safety of all of those attending these festivals and events. In years past dogs were mingling through a crowd which always includes small children and even infants. Events are only enjoyable when everyone can enjoy them safely.  At this year's Mushroom Festival, we will be having the "Cute as a Button Baby Photo Contest", the Culinary Tent, the S...

The Kennett Square Farmer's Market is held every Friday from May 14 to October 29 from 2-6 PM at State and Union St. (Route 82).  There is a great variety of locally produced goods including Amish baked goods, cut flowers and plants, European bread, artisan cheeses, home-made jams and jellies, and grass fed meats. Everything looks so good! I tried something new this week, and it was delicious--blackberry pie made by a young woman from Nottingham, Pennsylvania.  Out of this world!

Chester County, Pennsylvania's Town Tours and Village Walks visited Kennett Square Thursday night, and after meeting in an area in the center of town known as the Genesis (after the company who built the office building and parking garage) Walkway, we set off for a tour which concentrated on early schools.                  We started out at the Kennett Friends Home on State Street.  From the 1850's until 1900, it was the Eaton Academy, a school for boys and girls. We were greeted by a local man who represented an early director of the school. Then we met a teacher and student from the 19th century Kennett Academy and Seminary.                 The New Century Club was the design of a Philadelphia architect, Walter Ferns Price, and was part of a turn of the 20th Century women's movement t...

Chip Plumley Prudential Fox & Roach REALTORS®   Residential real estate is gaining stability in concert with the recovering U.S. economy. Consumers, drawn by one of the most attractive buyers’ markets on record marked by historically low interest rates and lower home prices in many areas, are returning to the market to move up, trade down, improve location and otherwise enhance their share of the American Dream. When it comes to home buying, the ideal situation would be to find a new home, just as you receive an offer on your existing home. You would then be able to close concurrently and move into your new home a few days prior to closing on your previous home. This does happen more often than not, but anyone looking to buy a new home needs to consider all the possible scenarios. Shoul...

Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is best known for its annual Mushroom Festival, but its residents and other visitors think it offers much more!  Homes located in the Borough of Kennett Square are much sought after because they offer the ability to walk to the shopping and dining in the downtown area.  Tulula's Table is actually the toughest reservation to get in the country--there is over a year wait for this night time reservation that can seat up to 12. Anson Nixon Park is a well-hidden treasure with beautiful bridges, walking paths, tennis courts and even a frisbee golf course.  And if nature is your thing, the beautiful Longwood Gardens are in close proximity. To vote for Kennett as the "Coolest Small ...

The DAILY LOCAL NEWS reports that Kennett Square's $30 million redevelopment plan for downtown passed its final hurdle this week when the Bayard Taylor Memorial Library Board of Trustees agreed to participate. The project will result in increased business and expand community and recreational services for area residents. Called the Kennett Area Community Development Plan, it involves four entities -- the Kennett Area YMCA, the Anson B. Nixon Park, the Bayard Taylor Library and the borough. The YMCA will get a $ 4 million, 14,928-square-foot expansion of space. The borough's maintenance shed will be removed and a new one built at a cost of $3 million. Old brick historic buildings on the park land will be restored. The old borough building will be used for storage or training facilities. ...

A high-tech but green treehouse has been built by the staff of Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and the Treehouse Workshop, using designs and construction techniques that preserved the tree from the branches in the canopy down to the roots. Although it rises 20 feet into the tree, neither does it bolt directly into the tree nor into massive concrete foundations. Using a technology called "Pin Foundation," it anchors directly to the ground using an unique combination of pre-cast concrete forms with steel pins. This foundation is said not to harm the tree roots. The interior of the treehouse shows the use of reclaimed lumber from an old dairy barn, a warehouse, and a toothpaste factory. Leaving the woodlands of Longwood Gardens, this is a view of the formal gardens and fo...
