Too Much Too Fast Ridley Creek was full of rain water yesterday from the downpours that hit this area in the last 24 hours. The current was so swift that nothing would be safe in its path.  More rain is on the way.  These photos were taken in Chester Park along the new trail.

Welcome to National Flag Day 2010. Flag day was first recognized in 1885 in Wisconsin.  It was in 1891 that it arrived in Pennsylvania when it was celebrated at the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia.  It continued to spread through various organizations and states until it was officially recognized by Woodrow Wilson in 1916.  June 14 became National Flag Day when an Act of Congress was signed by President Truman in 1949. The date was based on the Flag Resolution of 1777 passed by the Marine Committee of the 2nd Continental Congress.  The resolution established the 13 stripes and 13 stars but did not specify any particular design for the stars.  Since that time the flag has had multiple designs as the nation grew with the current design having been in place since July 4, 1960 with the add...

Welcome to the new Philadelphia Union Soccer team as they play their first game ever in Seattle today March 25. We've been waiting a long time but today the Philadelphia Union finally brings Major League Soccer to our area.  They will play their first match in Seattle in about 5 hours.  The Union will arrive in the Philadelphia area with their first home game on April 10.  On June 27, they will finally come to their permanent home now still under construction on the Chester PA waterfront. In February 2008, it was announced by Major League Soccer that Philadelphia would be the new home of the League's 16th Franchise.  This was the result of intense effort by the local community to win the team and of continuing efforts to forge ahead with the redevelopment in Chester PA.  With the partne...

Tuesday night, the Delaware County Council held their June monthly meeting in the original 1724 Chester Courthouse located in downtown Chester PA. The 1724 Courthouse is the oldest continuously used public building in the United States. Every year, several public functions are held in the original chambers to continue this long standing tradition of public use. The Council began the session with its regular business. This was followed by a great presentation by Carol of the Delaware County Historical Society on some of the history of the Courthouse and of Chester's development over the years. Finally, the meeting wrapped up with time for the Council members' comments and a public comment and question period. After the meeting, the Delaware County Historical Society also held their museu...

Last Thursday I had the opportunity to attend the first meeting being held by the City of Chester PA as they begin the process of updating their comprehensive plan. The City is holding a series of five public meetings to obtain input and ideas from the public on both the progress in the city to date and which items should be highlighted as priorities in the future.  The last Comprehensive Plan, Vision 2000, was completed in 1994.  The new plan, titled Vision 2020, is expected to be completed toward the end of 2009.  State law requires periodic updates to the plan. The first meeting was held on an informal basis at the Eastside Ministries on 9th St allowing participants ample opportunity to learn about various facets of the plan.  There were multiple charts and graphic displays which pro...

Welcome to the City of Chester, PA. Chester actually has two rail stations that are situated on the SEPTA R2 Regional Rail Line.  The one to the north is the main Chester Transportation Center located in the original downtown area of Chester within easy walking distance of much of its commercial core and government offices. This station is the next stop south and is known as the Highland Avenue Station.  Located just to the south of the Commodore Barry Bridge going from Chester to New Jersey, this platform is located about midway between the I95 Interstate exit to Highland Ave and the Delaware River.  It is the closest stop to the new Soccer Stadium which is being built just south of the bridge and the new commercial development along the riverfront including  The Wharf at Rivertown. Th...

The recent tragic death of 3 Chester Residents in a house fire has firefighters on the west side of the city saying they could have done more if there was more funding, staffing, and equipment for the fire company. It is my hope, that the city will see the value in increasing the funding for the fire department.  As the roughly $550 Million waterfront re-development project progresses, with its professional soccer stadium, new town homes, and new commercial areas, there will be dramatic increase in demand for these services, and an increase in the dollar cost of potential losses due to fire, I sincerely hope the city administration will see the merit of increasing the fire service budget before it is too late, and they are force to learn form experience. "Experience is something you get...

Chester is known for many things, including (Bill Haley and the Comets), but the world will soon know Chester as the home to yet another potential NBA star: A 90-minute documentary, "Gunnin' for That #1 Spot," which opens Friday in theaters in six cities, including New York, showcases 4 NBA top draft picks, and 4 up and comming stars of the sport, including Tyreke Evans of Chester, Pa., who has committed to Memphis.  Chester High School's Basketball team won the State AAAA Championship this year (for the sixth time!) crown, and they were ranked #8 in the nation by ESPN Chester has also produced such basketball names as Bo Ryan (head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison), and Jameer Nelson (a guard for the Orlando Magic)
