Growing up my mother had flowers that would bloom in our small yard throughout the growing months of the year. She loved flowers. In one small spot in her garden was a section for flowers that would grow in the Spring months, like daffodils, crocus, and lilies of the valley. And there were the taller flowers we called flags. They were the brown flower with yellow variety. It wasn’t until I was older and started to see purple flags in other places and in the art work of Vincent Van Gogh that I became aware of the name iris for the similarly shaped flowers.
