Hood River Hobbies Our oldest son, Sam, is a member of a local remote control flying club, Columbia Gorge Aeromodelers.  Here are some prior blogs (CGA1, CGA2, CGA3) about Columbia Gorge Aeromodelers.  Sam went out to fly earlier this afternoon, but had mechanical problems with the plane - a small screw for the wing attachment went missing.  Can't fly without the wing. Fortunately, Hood River Hobbies is close by.  John Frick runs Hood River Hobbies and Sam has gotten to know John well as he pursues his remote control flying hobby.  Hood River Hobbies is located at 110 Fourth Street in the downtown Hood River shopping district.  Hood River Hobbies has remote control airplanes as well as helicopters, plus all the parts to keep them running.  Part of the remote control flying experience is...

Columbia Gorge AeroModelers - Friday Night Fly-In - May Street Elementary School Last Friday, while Ben and I were road tripping to Seattle for the Seahawk game, Sam, our older son was flying indoors at May Street Elementary. Sam is a member of Columbia Gorge Aeromodelers, a remote control flying club. He joined in November 2009 and quickly learned to fly.  Each weekend, he was at the field flying.  As he learned, he wanted to get his own plane, rather than flying other member's planes.  By the end of the summer he acquired two planes and was flying each one proficiently.  During the winter, the club flys small planes and helicopters indoors.  Here are a couple of pictures of Sam and his planes.                                         Chuck and Chris keep a close eye on Sam as he prepar...

The town of Hood River, Oregon rang in the holidays Friday, December 3rd with its annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting ceremony. It was truly a Norman Rockwell-worthy evening as brilliantly decorated store fronts invited people in and huge numbers of bundled folks lined glittering Oak Street for the parade. We walked in the parade with the Hood River Adopt-A-Dog foundation with our newest addition, Jessa, whom we rescued in July. Then the community gathered around City Hall's massive evergreen as it lit brightly to life for the first time this season. It was magical. It seems that each new season brings to us new reasons to love living here. If you are looking to purchase a home in the Columbia Gorge region, be sure to check out ColumbiaGorgeFSBO.com.  Home and Property owners in Hoo...

Our Favorite Home Staging Tips, Part 2 The next major step you need in staging your home is to make any needed repairs. Most Purchase and Sale Agreements include a home inspection and you don't want to scare your buyer away with too many recommended repairs. Check out all the "systems", like the plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning systems, as well as all appliances that are to be sold with the house. You may consider new paint, carpet and repairs. At the very least, have the carpet professionally cleaned before showing. If you do decide on new paint, keep it neutral, like white or tan. Repair any dents or holes in walls, torn carpet, missing fixtures, cracked windows, leaky faucets, broken hardware, leaking roof etc. Also, have the windows professionally cleaned. Make sur...

ColumbiaGorgeFSBO - Getting Your Home Ready To Sell (Part 1) Sellers, you only get one chance for your real estate to make a first impression on your buyer. Make it as good as it can be. The more work you put into your home now, the better it will show and you'll have less to do when it comes time to actually move. Potential buyers are less likely to consider a messy, crowded or cluttered home, so clean out as much "stuff" as possible, anything you can live without for the time the house will be on the market. We recommend renting a storage unit and clearing out all clutter from the house, literally half of your belongings. You're going for clean surfaces here and a bare minimum of furniture. You don't want in-house storage or the garage to look full either, so pack and store the majori...

Last three days of the regular season - 3 teams fighting for two spots.  Padres lost again to the Cubs last night: 1-0, in the ninth inning.  All of the Padres bats have been hexed and should be burned.  They need new wood. Padres have to win all three games to claim the National League West division title. Padres are playing the Giants the last three games - how cool is that?  If the Padres win 3 there will be one final elimination game to determine the Division winner - Giants win one game and they are in.  High stakes head to head games --> early playoff baseball. The Braves can clinch the wild card spot by winning two games (or one win w/ a Padres loss). Bobby Cox, the Braves manager announced his retirement after this season - looks like he could be postponing his retirement for t...

Six Month Anniversary - ColumbiaGorgeFSBO.com Hello! We are Gretchen and Mel Ahrens, owners of ColumbiaGorgeFSBO.com. We moved to the community of Parkdale, Oregon in the summer of 2007.  Previously, we bought and sold real estate both FSBO and through a real estate broker/agent.  In moving to the Columbia Gorge region, we were interested in another FSBO transaction, but found it difficult to find relevant and timely information. The FSBO market information was inadequate, mainly limited to classified ads and small "For Sale By Owner" signs which we found as we drove through neighborhoods. Neither was efficient or very informative.  The need for one centralized Columbia Gorge regional FSBO forum was obvious to us. Additionally, we saw a need to present FSBO properties in a profession...

Here is my first attempt at a slide show on Active Rain and my outside blogs. It's short. You will need patience. You have to look very closely. You really had to be there...on July 4, 2009. But since you were not....here's the best my telephoto and I can do for you. And so: actionagents.net (in association with slide.com) PRESENTS These pictures have been credited to Hood River, OR but in truth they were taken from a rock on the Columbia River's north shore...just west of Bingen, WA.

The men (and women?) shown here are all up in the air. They may not know where  I  spent my Fourth.  So they are not up in the air on that. But they all know where they spent the Fourth:   Pulled along the surface of a wind-swept river at high speed and sometimes...if they work it right...up in the air on a kiteboard. It looks hard.  And marvelous. Better than skate boarding.  Better than snow boarding.  Better than sand boarding. Better than a man flying a kite:   A kite flying a man!     If only I hadn't been born 40 years too soon!       A little closer view:   One up and one down: One up and one down:                   Here is a great big HINT as to the location of these kiteboarders -- the mountain in the background of these photos:       For more hints to help you solve this myste...

Here are 17 little hints and two big ones: And 20 more little hints: One little and one very big hint: One hint up front and lots more behind: Coloring up the hints: What's behind the hospital flag on the near horizon?  A big HINT: Only a few years ago this would have been the dominant presence here on July 4: Now he has lots of competition in this famous place: Now these guys dominate the water and the airspace: An old HINT in the distance, a new hint in the foreground: Kindly watch my lines as well as your own: Skiing, not walking, on water: Cutting across the river under full sail...er...kite: My kite is prettier than your kite: Think they will collide?  Do we have a turf ...er..surf...battle here?   So where did I spend my Fourth?

It seams no mater where you turn you see the buzzword "Green".  What does this mean?  Is there a standard for "Green".  How do I know if a product is green or even Brown?  Is "Brown" better?  Just wondering.  Cardboard is brown and some of it is recycled, so is it then green?  I think we really need to come up with a better standard to define the term "Green".  Almost everyone is refering to their product as "Green", some even seem as if they are misrepresending themself.  If anyone knows of a standard out there, then please forward it.  I would love to know and even share it.
