Being born in spring, I can attest to the joys that come from everything "waking up" after winter's slumber. Watching birds borrowing pieces of hay for nest-building, hearing the "buggle-BEener" of the Red-winged Blackbird, seeing flocks of geese head south in V-formation and watching birds that suddenly appear in April are some of the grandest gifts that Mom Nature brings to our back door. My husband and I can sit at our dining room table and be entertained for hours by the creatures that grace our deck while indulging in the fare that I present to them. Oregon's state senate voted Thursday, April 6th to give designation to the Osprey, commonly known also as a Fishhawk to become the new Oregon state bird. They are often seen around waterways and Fishhawk Lake is one of them that gives wildlife enthusiasts a chance to see them soaring high above our lake community looking for fish to feed on. It was passed by the senate 24-5 and now heads to the House for approval.  The Western Meadowlark has been the state bird since 1927, but it also is the state bird for five other states as well, including Kansas and Montana, one of the reasons for voting for the change in Oregon's state bird. Osprey or "Fishhawks" are found in different parts of the country. I showed this video to a friend, recently as I had never seen this little bird in our Fishhawk Lake community or the Birkenfeld area. He told me it is called a Snowy Plover and in all of the years he and his family have been here, he's never seen one here! They are coastal birds found in North and South America, Eurasia and Africa, and this wee one must've been lost because of a storm last November, but the weather at the time I shot this was quite balmy. It is dipping its beak into a shallow puddle just outside the gate of our small ranch. We've been barraged with snow here in Birkenfeld OR since about 5am with steady, large and wet flakes of snow. The birds often are perplexed as to where to find food in the white stuff. Normally, this Northern Flicker would be seen on the ground, but not today! He was busy at one of my bird-feeding dishes, just outside my kitchen window, up on the deck. Love this bird, so beautiful! Here's a bit of a bio thanks to my favorite bird site: Cornell Lab of Ornithology. "Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. Today is the day that my husband and I close on our sweet log cabin on the water at Fishhawk Lake. I first saw them about 1:30pm. One was on top of the other. I took several videos throughout the day. This was the last one. They were in a struggle for the territory, but seemed somewhat equally matched. One was bloody, though and that was the one that was on the bottom when I first saw them. They were oblivious to my being there.
