The Prince Edward County council met last night and decided to reduce the development charges by 50% in both the rural and urban areas of the county. At present the development charges for a newly built three bedroom home are a little over $18,000, and this will be reduced to approximately $12,000. Initially the plan was to only offer this reduction in the urban high service areas, but it was decided to extend the break to the entire county. There has always been a bit of a difference of opinion in the county as residents try to balance economic growth with the preservation of the county's more bucolic nature. It's a fine balance and sometimes issues can be a little contentious, as is the case with the development of wind turbines. One day I will pluck up the courage to write about that...

Lake on the Mountain in Prince Edward County is about a five minute drive from Picton on the way to the Glenora ferry. It's a great half hour stop (unless you happen to be having your lunch or dinner at the Lake on the Mountain Resort - a fabulous restaurant that serves some of the great local Prince Edward County wines), in which case I'm sure you'll be staying a bit longer.Lake on the Mountain is a natural oddity that sits 203 feet above the Bay of Quinte with no visible source of the water. The Mohawks believed the lake was bottomless and used to offer gifts to the spirits here, as they believed it was a sacred place where the three sisters, Corn, Squash and Beans lived. I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion, but the place certainly has an odd feel to it. The lake must be fed...

The boardwalk at Picton Harbour is called The Glen Allan Public Boardwalk in honour of the S.S. Glen Allan, a freight steamer that worked out of the harbour. The S.S. Glen Allan used to load up with cheese and apples in Picton and other Prince Edward County harbours and transport them to the markets in Montreal. Picton Harbour used to be a very busy commercial harbour, a centre for shipping agricultural products across the Great Lakes to other destinations in Canada and the U.S.A. Today the harbour is less a centre of commerce and more of a recreational spot. The marina at the harbour is maintained by the County itself and there's a public boat launch. Apparently it costs $6.00 to launch your boat and the honour system is in place. Put your $6.00 in an envelope and put it in the box. No...

The Crystal Palace in Picton, Prince Edward County was finished in 1887. It is a scaled down replica of the 19 acre Crystal Palace that was built in London by Joseph Paxton in 1851. For a while it was all the rage to build structures like these in North America for agricultural fairs and similar buildings sprung up all across the continent. The one in Picton is the last remaining one in North America. It's nowhere near as impressive in size or scope as the one in London, but then again, Picton is a town of about 4000 people, so it does the job. The building is still put to good use and hosts many events. This building is still the main exhibition space for the very popular Prince Edward County agricultural fair, but it is used throughout the year for different events, one of the more no...

Prince Edward County was designated as a "Globally Important Birding Area" in 1998 by The Canadian Nature Federation and Bird Studies Canada. As well as being the home to a diverse variety of birds, it's an important stop for migrating birds, as it's the first opportunity to land after crossing Lake Ontario. In the spirit of trying to help our feathered friends, Birhouse City was established in 1980. Birdhouse City isn't just a random scattering of birdhouses, each house is a replica of a building in or around Picton in Prince Edward County. The County has done a very good job preserving its history and its fun to think that there's a miniature version of the area just for the birds. The very first birdhouse created was this 80 room replica of the Massassauga Park hotel. I wonder if the...

The air had a sharp autumn twang as the last days of summer came to a close. It was the first day in September, the year 1800. Young William, at the tender age of 6, played outside with his brothers as his Father Robert Macaulay was pronounced dead by the district coroner. It was an eventful day in history. Unbeknownst to young William, his subsequent inheritance of 500 acres in the Hallowell district on the shores of the Bay of Quinte, would have a great influence on a country which would come to be known as 'Canada'. Robert Macaulay had been born in Ornagh, Ireland in 1744 and had emigrated to the USA as a young man of 20.By the mid 1770s he had attained a sizable estate on Lake Champlain. A man of courage and great conviction, he had been twice detained for aiding the British during th...
