Prince Edward County has a number of rural villages and hamlets where the pace of life seems a little less rushed and things don't change very quickly. When you start driving into the more southern parts of the County it can almost feel like stepping back in time. The roads are a little narrower and less straight, you won't come across franchised stores or restaurants, and you'd better make sure your tank has some gas in it, as there are some stretches where you won't encounter a gas station. Luckily enough, the village of Milford does have a gas station, so if you're in the area and running low on gas, head for Milford. While you're there, you might as well stop in at the Milford Bistro and grab a bite to eat. If you are going to stop for dinner though, it would be wise to phone ahead,...

Mariners Park Museum is located near South Bay in Prince Edward County. It's one of those interesting places where you can walk around and feel like you're the only person in the world, a bit like Euro Disneyland, except without the rides. This is the appeal of Prince Edward County though, there's rarely a rush here. The museum is basically an outdoor collection of some of the more interesting artifacts from the County's maritime history.  More than two thirds of all shipwrecks in Lake Ontario have occured in the waters just off of Prince Edward County. Over 50 wrecks have been located to date, and the area has been dubbed as the Graveyard of Lake Ontario. Scuba diving is a popular activity around here. There is a lighthouse in the museum, and the latern room and parapet were built in 1...

One third of all farmland in the County was used for growing barley, and at its peak, the County was shipping 50,000 bushels a day to the port of Oswego in New York. When the civil war developed south of the border in 1861, the price of barley shot up to $2.40 a bushel. It remained a very profitable business until the Americans introduced very high tariffs in the 1890's which pretty much killed the demand. The remains of one of the granaries used to store this b...

Little Bluff Conservation Area is one of those hidden gems in Prince Edward County. It's down at the southern end of the County where things are very quiet and people (other than the near-by residents) rarely go. I have been there over a dozen times and have yet to see another soul (other than my dog) using this amazing conservation area. The southern end of Prince Edward County is very sparsely populated, so not a whole lot of traffic ever gets out that way. I remember reading a newspaper article a while ago that described the area as being "bucolic" and I had to look up what the word meant,  it's an accurate description. Little Bluff Conservation area is maintained by the Quinte Conservation Authority, not to be confused with the Lower Trent Conservation Authority. It's a Canadian thi...
