Everyone in Simcoe County was shocked when the Tornado warning on Tuesday night resulted in a tornado touching down in Angus in Essa Township. The EF2 Tornado touched down in Angus around 5 pm on Tuesday night. Approximately 100 homes were damaged as the twister touched down behind Nottawasaga Pines Secondary school and then moved east towards the 5th line. The hardest hit area was in the newer subdivision along Stonemount and Banting Crescent.  What has been evident throughout this disaster is the great sense of community that we have here in Simcoe County and Essa Township. Staff at Essa Township have been overwhelmed with requests from residents and businesses throughout the community. So, how can you help those who have been affected by the Tornado? Volunteer The Township is accepti...

I was just listening to an interview on The Fan 590, a sports radio station in Toronto, when I heard an interview with Russel Peters (an Indo-Canadian comedian) who was promoting his new movie, Breakaway. He mentioned that he has teamed up with Pepto-Bismol Canada in a Facebook promotion raising money for Thanksgiving Dinners for the needy in Canada. I followed the instructions, and they are simple and seem to work, and now I am asking you if you would take the time to help the needy before this weekend (Thanksgiving Day in Canada). On Facebook, search for: Pepto-Bismol Canada, and click on it. You will see a picture of Russel Peters asking you to like the Page, click on the [Like] button on top of the page. Another picture of Russel Peters will appear in front of the Turkey, click on t...

Could you incorporate any of the following tips in your kitchen? Save energy and some money by:   Being Refrigerator frugal - Your refrigerator probably consumes more electricity than any other household appliance.  Ice makers and cold water dispensers can increase your energy usage by aver ten percent (consider this when choosing to use them or not).  If you have an older fridge with coils in the rear, keep them a couple of inches from the wall, and vacuum/dust them twice a year (the dust build-up reduces efficiency). Using water wisely at the kitchen sink - When cleaning vegetables and fruit, put them in a bowl of water and then clean them, rather than running the tap.   Use a low-flow aerator (can save you as much as ten litres of water a minute). Re-use water used to steam vegetable...

The following tips might help you reduce the energy you consume (and save you some money) while cooking in the kitchen: Use a toaster oven/infrared cooker/microwave - these appliances use a fraction of the energy that a full-sized oven consumes and often is a perfect size for heating/re-heating/cooking a meal When Boiling Water - use the electric kettle first, it can be up to twice as efficient as boiling a pot of water on the stove. When hard boiling eggs, making pasta, cooking vegetables etc, use your electric kettle to boil the water first. Cook using residual heat - this is not as tricky as it sounds... Reduce your energy use when roasting, making casseroles or baking by turning the oven off a few minutes before the recipe indicates and use the heat of the oven to finish the dish (i...

Natural Resources Canada says that just one under inflated tire can reduce your mileage by as much as FOUR PERCENT!!! Keeping your tires properly inflated (following the automobile manufacturers guidelines located on the side of the driver's door and also in the automotive handbook) will help save our planet by wasting less of our precious resources, causing less pollution, help your car handle better while driving and braking, and will help save you some money! Check your tire pressure regularly, before you drive (when the tires are cold).    Here is a link to a video I saw featuring an 8 in 1 digital pressure tool on CTC House of Innovation site:  Multi-purpose automotive tool If you spend just $25 dollars a week, just one under inflated tire could cost you almost $50/yr in extra fuel...

Recently I was commissioned by the Rainbow Mall to design a wall graphic memorial to the fallen Canadian soldiers who have served in United Nations Peace Keeping efforts. It was a month in planning and execution and on Monday March 16th the dedication took place. CFB Borden Base Commander Colonel Hamel, The Minister of Foreign Affairs Office representative Valerie Knight and veterans from the Angus and Barrie Legion along with the Army, Navy, Air Force Club were on hand to witness the solemn event. As four soldiers had been repatriated home to Canada in the previous days it was a poignant reminder that reflected the efforts of our peace keepers in Afghanistan. The wall graphic shows a field of red poppies reaching up to a blue sky. There are 225 names of fallen soldiers written on the w...

The first suggestion in most Home Staging consultations is to declutter. It starts in the foyer upon entering the home. Homeowner's cannot see how much stuff they have out everywhere as they see their belongings every day and it just does not register with them how overwhelming it appears to outsiders. Once the process of Staging has been finished the homeowner can feel a sense of ease come over them and they realize how much they were being affected negatively by all the clutter in the home. Not to mention that they can find whatever they are looking for quite easily now.  In this home in Angus, it was suggested to declutter and keep only the spring jackets that they would be wearing in the next 30 days, one pair of shoes each, paint the black chair white and store the items in the exp...
