When is that magical moment when you decide to hang up the keys, turn off the phone, sit back and watch the rest of the world go by.  Is it a moment?...or does it happen gradually.  How does one just let go of a passion.  I've been told that I'll know when it's time. When it's time, this is what I hope I'll be doing more of.  I just happened to catch these "Seniors" enjoying some time at the Jackson St. Pier on Lake Erie in downtown Sandusky, OH.  They were unconcerned with what was going on around them and seemed to be just enjoying the moment.  I don't know if they caught anything, but that's not what seemed important anyway.  Hoping someday that I'll be doing a different kind of fishing.

This is a photo of the quaint Lakefront Community of Old Plat in Huron, OH.  It embodies the essence of this humble community and it's precious resource.  If you look closely, you can see the "bones" of the world class Roller Coaster capital of the world, Cedar Point Amusement Park

I grew up on the shores of Lake Erie on the Cedar Point peninsula in Sandusky, Ohio. We lived on what is affectionately called the Chaussee aka Cedar Point Road. We were approximately one mile from the world-famous, Cedar Point Amusement Park. Living on the lake taught me early on the benefits of “location, location, location”. We spent idyllic summer days sunning, swimming, water skiing, and sailing on Lake Erie, across the street from our house and fishing off the seawall on Sandusky Bay right from our own backyard. For additional fun, our parents drove us a mile down the road to "the park". We spent winter days ice skating and ice boating on the bay.  Even as a little girl, I understood that Cedar Point was a magical place to live a...

THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD IN BERLIN HEIGHTS OHIO a repeat From the desk of the Fairy Housemother The Christmas Season…..that wondrous time of year where simple homes and neighborhoods morph into extraordinary displays of lights and sounds of the holiday. Children and adults alike delight in the welcome change during the short, cold days of winter. I think we all have a vision in our heads of what a beautiful display looks like….. Candles aglow in the windows, draping garland on the fence, a red bow wreath on the front door, colored lights brightening the darkness.   But, so much joy of the season, centers around the pure joy and excitement of the children.  What does the Christmas Season look like to them? There is a house in the Village of Berlin Heights, OH, that I think must look l...

Is Selling Real Estate an Aerobic Sport?   Here we are, in the middle of the Winter Olympics and I’m thinking….is there some kind of parallel between Selling Real Estate and an Aerobic Sport? I live and work in Northern Ohio.  We’ve had our share of Snow and Cold Emergencies this year.  The Schools have all used up their calamity days and are looking to extend the school year….Booo Right now the roads are clear and it is a crisp 7 degrees outside.   Another winter storm is on the way and I think I am getting a little numb to it all. Last Friday afternoon, I showed five houses to a new buyer.  Some of the houses were vacant, and all were of the two story variety.  The first house wasn’t so bad.  It was difficult finding parking because the driveway was drifted shut, but there was som...

Winter in Milan Ohio When most of us are holed up at home in front of the fireplace, there are others who are out enjoying the beauty of the season. I am grateful to Lori Lewis that she needed her special cup o’ joe from The Coffee Station in Milan Square.  She took a moment to share some of her observations. This quaint little village is the home of Thomas A. Edison and was a major shipping port in the 1800’s.   Milan is a special place to visit in every season.  And by the way, we say it My-lan not milawn

‘Tis the Season to be Merry and Bright in Berlin Heights, Ohio..…Right?............. I’m having trouble finding the Merry this Christmas Season.  I am a worrier…. Are you? Worry is a pointless, time-wasting, energy sapping endeavor…..I know this.  I know how to tell you not to worry, I know all the right things to say.  But, I have trouble applying those same principles to myself.  I often worry about things that I have no control over….none….zero….and yet I do.  It’s like telling a clock not to tick.  Like I really believe all my worrying can change an outcome.  I know I am not that powerful. But, even though the Merry of the Season sometimes seems to be missing, I know where to find the Bright. It is in the sun dappled trees just aft...

Berlin Heights, Ohio, Christmas Bazaar Berlin Heights, OH hosts an annual Christmas Bazaar every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  This year it was on November 23.It is held in the Edison Middle School Gym and always offers a variety of fun and different items for purchase.  It costs just $1 to get in the door  Much of what is offered is handmade and an opportunity for the Artisans to show off their wares.  There were breads and pies and candies and jams and cider and apples and all sorts of other edible goodies.  Some of the more interesting vendors offered repurposed lightbulbs, stained glass, decorative gourds, and custom candy bouquets.                                                                                                   I entered the 50/50 drawing sponsored by...

I have been working with a client that just can't seem to find her "connection" with a house. After several weeks of searching, I received this email.....Dear Mary, I don't think I want to see any more houses because I'm just tired of being disappointed.....Oh dear, she's hit the wall.                                                              The next day, two new listings came on the market that fit her criteria, so I sent them to her.  "Let's just go look and maybe have a talk, and see where it takes us." We went to look, and...Found THE House.  As we were leaving she said to me, "Do they call you the Fairy Housemother?, because you never gave up on me even when I gave up on myself." Hmmmm.....I rather like the sound of it....Fairy Housemother.  I think I'll keep it.               ...

I inherited this Christmas Cactus when my father died more than 15 years ago.  It blooms twice a year and each time, it is a sweet reminder of his love and continued presence in my life.

Ash Trees—Help Available Through WSOS   The first time I saw one, in 2008, I thought, “what a pretty bug”.  It was about ½  inch long and fluorescent green.  Little did I know……   Since then, the four acres of hardwoods that surround my home, have been heavily impacted by this “pretty bug”.    The Emerald Ash Borer (an Ash tree killing insect from Asia), was first discovered near ToledoOhio in 2003.  Although there was a statewide ban on firewood in 2008, the Ash Borer has decimated much of the Ash tree population in Ohio.  This is significant, because it is estimated that 1 in every 10 trees in Ohio’s forests is an Ash tree.  In fact, it may be the most serious problem facing Ohio’s forests today.   Breann Hohman, Watershed Coordinator for the Erie Soil & Conservation District, reports...

How To Preserve Kale   One more food blog.   I am part of a C.S.A. (Community Supported Agriculture) Program with Mulberry Creek Herb Farm.   We had a pick up today and this was some of our haul.                         We have been getting a lot of Kale.  Not my favorite thing, but…it is wonderful in soups and stir fry.  I want to share with you a way to preserve it, or keep it for later to add to your soups, stews or stir frys.   Start with fresh Kale…rinse well to get the sand out and spin dry.  This spinner is a wonderful gadget that can take excess water out of greens or whatever.    Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil and add Kale in batches.  Let it boil for three minutes.  Remove to a colander and plunge into ice cold water for an equal number of minutes.     When all the Kal...

Real Estate.com recently printed an article, Riding the Trillion-Dollar Real Estate Recovery Roller Coaster.  Are we in fact "coming out of it?" Or, do we still have a ways to go.  If Erie County, OH Short Sale Market is any indication, I say we still have a ways to go. Seller’s in the short sale market in Erie County, Ohio are still fighting an uphill battle.  Recent stats indicate that we still have a lot of inventory and closed sales are still the exception to the rule.  Despite promises by banks to be more cooperative and timely, the process remains fraught with problems.                If you find yourself in the position to consider a short sale, enlist the help of an experienced Realtor, ask questions, become as fully informed about the process as you can, and be patient, be pati...

Enjoying the Fruits of Their Labor Our local C.S.A. program at Mulberry Creek Herb Farm is in their second quarter. Since it’s start up in the Spring of 2012, we have seen an increase in variety and quantity of produce.  During our scheduled pick up time, it is not uncommon to find one of the farmers there and have a chance to chat about what’s in the take home bags, how to use it, what’s coming next, etc.  They always have a variety of “freebies” to take home from their excess and a chance to sample some things that I may have never known existed. This week we got a bunch of carrots, red and golden beets, all colors of green beans, onions, tomatoes, basil, and red and green peppers.  Some of the freebies included, swiss chard, more tomatoes, eggplant, and some little things that looked...
