Located in the north-central part of Cincinnati, Clifton was first incorporated as a village in 1850. During the nineteenth century, Clifton was developed with large mansions by some of the city's leading businessmen. In 1896, Cincinnati annexed the city of Clifton and the University of Cincinnati relocated to Burnet Woods Park. Today, the University dominates the area and many of the local businesses support the student community. Many of the side streets surrounding the Ludlow Business District are lit using original gas lamps and is known today locally as the Gaslight District.
