Originally posted at Trends in Hardwood Floors for Westchester NY Hardwood is the preferred type of flooring in Westchester. Hardwood floors are beautiful, last a lifetime (and then some), and they are easy to clean and maintain. Those with allergies and asthma especially prefer hardwood flooring, and we are often ripping up carpeting to convert to hardwood, especially when people are moving into new homes.     If customers can't afford hardwood flooring, they will sometimes revert to laminate flooring or carpet. While these surfaces cost less than hardwood, in the long run, they will cost more, as they will need to be replaced more often. Furthermore, hardwood improves the value of your home, so when it is time to sell - whether that's in the next year or 20-30 yrs from now - you will ...

Many of my customers ask me whether prefinished hardwood or unfinished hardwood is better and which costs less. We install both types of hardwood, and the truth is, it depends on which of below factors is most important to you. Definitions "Prefinished hardwood" means that the hardwood has been finished in the factory and then you just install it. "Unfinished" means you have raw hardwood that needs to be nailed into the floor and then sanded & refinished on-site. Benefits of Prefinished hardwood flooring 1.  More scratch resistant/lasts longer. Prefinished hardwood is 7-10x more scratch resistant than unfinished hardwood. That's because when it's finished on site, you generally get 2-3 coats of polyurethane while when it's made in the factory, you usually get at least 6-7 coats which ar...

All of us can use more time in the week...and now DocuSign promises to save real estate agents 3 hrs a week.  Kind of makes me want to become a real estate agent because I could really use those extra 3 hours.  While I definitely need more down time from work, for purposes of this, I'm going to talk about how I would productively use my time to better build my biz...because if I can do that, ultimte, I can take more than 3 hrs a week. My big focus would be concentrating on past customers - reconnecting with them to see if they have friends that they can refer and who knows...the hope is that soon they will be ready for their next flooring project. Past customers is where it's at...they already know you and your work.  And, they are happy with you.  I love doing work with past customers....

Do you know that feeling when you lose something very important to you and you think you may never find it again?  It's really an awful feeling.  It's ironic because I was just having a conversation about this w/ my afternoon customer.  They were away and lost their puppy July 4th weekend (he was terrorized by the fire works).  3 days later they found him...he was all raggedy but happy to be re-united and they were thrilled.  And, that puppy is such a cutie, and I could so relate as we had a very similar experience when I was 13 and we lost our dog...and found her 5 days later.  While I was always thrilled to see my dog, never had I been so happy to see her w/ tears running down my eyes. Well this is not quite the same thing because it didn't involve a life, but I'm in Starbucks (what e...

I couldn't help but laugh...my customer called my competition (that annoying carpet guy on TV) and wasn't treated very well.  Her reaction was classic. On Saturday, I had a rush appointment with a customer who had a flood in her basement and needs the carpet replaced.  Because it was a crazy holiday weekend, I just rushed to the appointment and was not able to touch base with my contact at the restoration company, so I didn't have all the needed info (e.g. what type of carpet they had...so we could get one at replacement value).  I figured it wouldn't be a problem since there is usually a left over piece there, so I can figure out.  But, apparently there wasn't. I couldn't get in touch w/ my guy (not to worry...as we should have everything resolved and ordered Tues morning), but we want...

This morning's customer was looking for a granite countertop and backsplash combo for her home in Westchester County - fun design work for me.  There seem to be a lot out there who want to spruce up their homes by making modest changes.  The cabinets are usually the most expensive part of the kitchen, and if they are in good condition, it makes it easy to upgrade your kitchen without spending a fortune.   Her cabinets are similar to her floors - butterscotch oak. And, she has 2 tones of warm browns on the walls.  She wanted a light creamy granite that would tie the tones together (as well as give her flexibility for the future when she is hoping to stain the hardwood floors a dark brown. I found her this Santa Cecilia granite which seems to do the trick.  The color in this picture isn't...

Today Westchester County released the 2011 budget and slashed the Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center's to just $200,000, resulting in the elimination of half the permanent workforce (two of the four), the entirety of the seasonal staff, and 100 percent of their operating budget. Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown is a sustainable living education center and working farm of over 18- acres, and with a network of hiking trails in over a hundred acres of forest, and owned by Westchester County. The County bought this historical land in 1991 through an initiative by then county executive Andy Spano, when it was up for auction, to preserve the open space and protect drinking water. The Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm, Inc. has been working with the County on this year's budget to fi...

The town of Yorktown is located in northern Westchester County, and is primarily split into the Yorktown and Lakeland school districts, with small areas located in the Croton and Ossining districts. All information is from the Westchester Putnam Multiple Listing Service.  Yorktown saw an increase in median price for May 2010 compared to May 2009 but the transaction total was smaller. However, the number of homes under contract is very healthy.  Transaction totals fell from 13 to 8; Median price is up from $385,000 to $436,250; and a whopping 60 homes are under contract for sale at a median asking price of $427,450. That pending sale data is all good news.  There are 217 homes actively for sale, and there is still plenty of warm weather left for those homes to move.
