There are times when the light is just right and the blooms are at their peak.  Sometimes you just get lucky.  But then again – The Tarrytown NY Rivere walk provides  me with a terrific subject.  If I took bad pictures with all that going for me – I should just stop taking photos altogether.   In any case, Jade, Tundra and I decided to take a walk along the River Walk around 6:00 PM  about 10 days ago.  People were out.  There was plenty of activity  – and who can blame them?   Some areas just lend themselves to gatherings.  This is one of them. Whether fishing, strolling, walking the dogs or reading on a bench – people can’t help but congregate in such a wonderful outdoor “room.”  And if you live at Hudson Harbor – this is truly your back yard.         © 2011 – Ruthmarie G. cs: Fotos on the Fly, Tarrytown, Walkable Neighborhoods in Westchester, Walking Trails in Westchester County Leave A Comment The other day I  found myself near Tarrytown in early the evening and I decided to see what the was happening on the River Walk.  When public monies go into planning a project -it is always hoped that the public will enjoy the space.  Reclaiming the shore along the Hudson for a long River Walk was a brilliant idea and I was pleased to see that the public was taking full advantage of the weather and the area.  There were many people walking, sitting, chatting and quite a few were taking advantage of the fishing.  To think that when I was a child we thought the Hudson was polluted beyond repair.  I found myself enjoying the scene so much that I actually spent over a...

It was nice to see that the rain that was literally drenching the area had come to an end.  Friday – was a blustery March day with both clouds and sun.  Luckily, I was able to enjoy a bit of a walk with my camera in tow.  I had an errand at Hudson Harbor and decided to take a walk on the new portion of the Westchester River Walk in Tarrytown NY.   The River Walk is an ambitious plan to create a linear park and walking trail along the Hudson River that extends from the northern tip of the county in Peekskill to Yonkers at the border of the Bronx.  This portion has just been constructed.  I was there a couple of years ago before the plan had come to life. I was lucky enough to get the New York City Skyline with the base of the Tappan Zee Bridge serving as a “frame.  Looking north I got a ...

The Westchester Christmas Lights displays are now starting to “mature.”  Homes and businesses which were obviously works in progress last week have now bloomed into major displays.  Saturday night I came across a particularly strong Christmas display in Tarrytown NY on Route 9. It was at the front of the Reformed Church – which is in and of itself a Tarrytown monument.  Instead of the typical Creche scenes associated with churches, this particular display had a festive holiday twist to it.  I got off a couple of good shots (OK I’m trying to do better with night photography – it is a work in progress.)  But still – I think this captures the spirit of the display: © 2010 – Ruthmarie G. High end specialty retail is not limited to NYC.  Westchester has its share of unqiue boutiques and Bark & Meow of Tarrytown is the perfect place to find a great gift for your favorite canine or feline member of the family.   Laura Haupt, the owner has her two pets acting as the wecloming committee.  Juno wasn’t there the day I was but Sachi – the beautiful Shiba Inu was at the door welcoming me.   Like most Shiba’s, Sachi exudes confidence and was obviously delighted to see me… The store is now decked out for the Holiday Season with toys and treats for dogs and cats. There is something for everyone here.  Cats have their own special boutique section while much of the store is dedicated to the needs of dogs.  Holiday collars abound – Jade, Tundra and Buddy are now sporting theirs.   Th...

Distance to New York City: approximately 25 milesSize: approximately 3.7 square miles OverviewPicturesque Tarrytown, meaning Wheat Town in Dutch, was founded around 1650 by Dutch settlers and is nestled within the wooded hills above the banks of the mighty Hudson River. It's most dominating landmark is the Tappan Zee Bridge which connects the New York Thruway between Tarrytown and Nyack. The Village of Tarrytown blends the quaint charm of a historic river village with the hustle and bustle of a popular downtown area complete with thriving retail businesses, varied dining opportunities and interesting antique stores. Few Hudson Valley regions offer the variety of hotels, shops and restaurants that Tarrytown possesses. Furthermore there are also a number of very beautiful historic sites t...

As the colder weather season continues to approach homeowners should employ the following cost-effective ways to make their homes more energy-efficient while better managing energy bills year-round. -Have home heating systems cleaned and inspected by a professional each year to ensure safety and optimum efficiency. Be sure to change the filter prior to the heating season, and check its condition monthly. -Inspect the caulking and weather-stripping around all windows, doors and any openings for utility services. Replace caulking and weather-stripping as necessary. A drafty house lets warm air escape and is much more costly to keep warm. -Remove window air conditioners if possible, or install an air conditioner cover to eliminate drafts. -Keep fireplace dampers closed tightly when not in ...

Hope Everyone had a Happy Halloween! I won’t say much more about that holiday because I think I pretty much covered the Westchester Halloween scene from top to bottom.  The one thing I like about Halloween is that its the one day that you can wear just about ANYTHING you want – even if you are grown up.   Sadly, Sunday is a work day for me so I had to attend any festivities disguised as myself.  It’s an interesting costume – and  I tend to wear it most every day.  Not to imaginative I grant you – but there it is. The photo to the right was taken just outside the the Tarrytown Music Hall near dusk on Halloween.  I had been in the area and had stopped by Coffee Labs for a coffee and there was Casper doing his Halloween haunting just  a mile or so away from the Headless Horseman Bridge.. ...

This will very much vary depending on the type of work that is done. Remodeling magazine publishes an annual "Cost vs. Value Report" that can answer this question in more detail, based on the top 15 home improvements. In a recent study it conducted it says the highest remodeling paybacks have come from mid- to high-end siding and window replacements, hardwood and natural stone flooring upgrades, major kitchen and bathroom remodeling, bathroom and family room additions, and mid-range master bedroom suites.  An important point to remember is that remodeling not only improves a home's livability, it also enhances its curb appeal with future buyers.
