Is Sleepy Hollow a real place or just fiction name?  It is a real place.  Although the name described in Washington Irving’s story was based on real life the name did not always exist.  in 1996, after a couple of failed tries and much debate, residents voted 2-to-1 to change the name of the village to Sleepy Hollow, capitalizing on Irving's 1820 tale and people's growing fascination with the supernatural and Halloween.When you think of American folklore and Halloween you can not avoid this legend. I have read many other posts on Active Rain about drives to help citizens in need.  The Gullotta House is an organization in Westchester County NY that helps those in need.Their upcoming fundraiser is this Saturday, The Headless Horseman Polar Plunge.  The plunge will be held on Saturday February 13, 2021  at noon.  Participants will plunge into the Hudson River.I am very happy to donate and support the contractor of our BNI group Mike Corraro.  Mike is really being a good sport and getting us all involved for the very imprtant cause. 02/09/2021

On my way to the Headless Horseman Hayride and Haunted Houses, I stopped off at the Sleep Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow NY to set the mood right. This has been listed on New York and National Register of Historic Places. The Cemetery was formally opened (as Tarrytown Cemetery) in 1849.Fun fact about who rests here. They include nationally-known individuals including Brooke and Vincent Astor, Major Edward Bowes, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Samuel Gompers, Oswald Villard, Thomas Watson, and, of course, Washington Irving. Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is 85 acres in size, has over 40,000 in-ground interments, and a new community mausoleum. If you are looking for some unique Halloween fun and live in the Hudson Valley I have a great suggestion.Washington Irving was a great American author who lived here and wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1819.  The original town of North Tarrytown, just over the Tappan Zee Bridge changed its name to Sleepy Hollow.  There is lots of history here.Come to the Old Dutch Church on evenings in October and he master story teller Jonathan Kruk dramically tell the story of The Legend of Sleppy Hollow.You will hear of the Headless Horseman, Icabad Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, and others.  What a great place to hear this tale at night in the Old Dutch Church next to the old grave yard.For tickets click on this link.
