MONROE - State police want residents in the Town of Monroe to secure their trash cans, get rid of bird seed, and take other precautions to be sure they're not attracting bears. Police say they've had to chase bears out of residential neighborhoods across Monroe several times last week. Friday was the latest sighting, close to Round Lake. The bears have been rummaging through garbage pails, but have not posed a threat to residents, police said. Environmental experts say you can prevent attracting bears by not leaving garbage outside before collection day, cleaning trash cans regularly with ammonia or Lysol, reminding children not to leave food or food wrappers outside, cleaning your outdoor grills, and by not putting out bird seed.

MONROE - Ace Egg Farms in the Monroe area has donated 15,120 eggs to a number of food banks in the Mid-Hudson in an effort to make Easter a little more egg-citing for families. Ace Vice President Michael Grindrod said they have donated eggs for years. This is the first time they have done it to different food pantries. In the last two years, the donated their entire allotment to the Food Bank of Westchester County, but this Easter decided to donate them to the local food pantries as well, "due to the economic times and we want to get more involved with the communities," he said. This year, Ace Farms donated eggs to the Highland Mills Food Pantry, Montgomery Food Pantry, the Food Bank of Westchester and Monroe Food Pantry. Grindrod said 15,000 eggs are valued at almost $1,200.

CENTRAL VALLEY - A state official has rejected a petition by Monroe-Woodbury school board member Theresa Budich to invalidate a teachers' contract the district approved in September and to remove board President Michael DiGeronimo. In a four-page decision signed March 13, state Education Commissioner Richard Mills ruled that DiGeronimo was entitled to vote on the three-year pact with the Monroe-Woodbury Teachers' Association even though his wife, Sharon, belongs to the union.Mills also found that Budich failed to prove her allegation that the contract "was not in the best financial interests of the taxpayers or students."Budich, who had opposed the contract as overly generous, said Tuesday that she may appeal because Mills misunderstood her argument that DiGeronimo's family ties should h...

HIGHLAND MILLS - The Broadway League recently selected 30 theater-loving kids ages 11-16 from around the country to be on its first Kids Advisory Board. Highland Mills resident and Monroe-Woodbury High School freshman Jordan Zuber-Banks is one of them. They were introduced at the 13th annual Kids' Night on Broadway pre-theater kickoff party at Madame Tussauds in New York City, following their first board meeting and lunch with Kids' Night on Broadway national ambassador Rosie O'Donnell. "Being on the Broadway League's Kids Advisory Board means a lot to me," said Jordan, who described himself as an avid theatergoer. "Not only will I be able to contribute ideas that will influence many other kids, but also I will be able to meet kids from all over the country and hear their opinions." The...

Existing-home sales declined in January with some buyers waiting to see how details of the economic stimulus package would affect them, according to the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®. At the same time, inventories fell to a two-year low.Existing-home sales, including single-family, townhomes, condominiums, and co-ops, fell 5.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.49 million units in January from a level of 4.74 million units in December, and are 8.6 percent lower than the 4.91 million-unit pace in January 2008. Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said there was understandable hesitation by some home buyers. "Given so much stimulus package discussion in January, some would-be buyers simply sat out for clarity and certainty on the nature of housing stimulus," he said. "The...

One of the biggest breaks being put forward is a new $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit.  There are two breaks for first-time homeowners in the tax code now. Which credit you can take depends on when you purchased your home. If you're a first-time home buyer and you purchased your home on or after April 8, 2008, and by Dec. 31, 2008, you do not qualify for the $8,000 first-time home buyer's credit recently signed into law by Obama. You can still take the $7,500 tax credit, but you have to pay that back because it's not really a credit. It's a 15-year, interest-free loan from the IRS. The $8,000 tax credit is available for qualifying home purchases made from Jan. 1, 2009, until Dec. 1, 2009. Did you notice I wrote Dec. 1? That's how it's worded in the law. At least the $8,000 is a t...

MONROE - As part of a long list of proposals for closing a $15.4 billion deficit, Gov. David Paterson has proposed issuing licenses to permit wine sales in grocery and convenience stores throughout the state. The idea has been debated before without success. But with the state's huge deficit and the governor's estimate that the state can raise $105 million next year by charging grocery stores various fees for the right to sell wine, liquor store owners are worried that the change in the law could occur this year.  For full story: http://www.remorealty.com/bin/web/real_estate?acnt=AR109792&ZKEY=&action=ACTIVATE_FRAMES&button=LOCAL_PHONE_NUMBERS&linkout_sourcepage=HOME&tm=&linkout=http%3A%2F%2Fthephoto-news.com
