Central Valley - As the members of Monroe-Woodbury Teen Mission completed their 10th successful year in the community, the holiday spirit permeated as the members reached out to the less fortunate.Teen Mission was created in 1990 by Rosann Scorcia-Ruggiero in the wake of the Columbine tragedy, as her own children questioned how and why something like that could happen. The community active group is designed "for teens, by teens." This year, the members actively participated in the Salvation Army bell ringing, in concert with Monroe-Wooddbury Rotary. They also raised funds to provide holiday food baskets and holiday gifts to residents of the Emergency Housing Shelter in Middletown. Members of the Highland Mills United Methodist Church recently held an "Operation Christmas Child" party during which more than 150 shoeboxes were filled with school supplies, basic hygiene items, small toys, clothing and other everyday items. On November 6, President Barack Obama signed into law the extension and expansion of the current homebuyer tax credit, an important step in ensuring a real estate and economic recovery. The measure extends the present $8,000 tax credit program for first-time homebuyers through April 30, 2010. It expands the program, effective November 7, 2009, to include current homeowners, who are now eligible for an up to $6,500 tax credit (10 percent of the purchase price) through April 30, 2010 provided they have lived in the home they are selling, or have sold, as principal residence for five consecutive years in the past eight years. CENTRAL VALLEY - Ten school administrators, including a Monroe-Woodbury assistant superintendent, have applied to replace Monroe-Woodbury Superintendent Joseph DiLorenzo when he retires at the end of the school year. The school board has already narrowed the field of contenders by asking Terrence Olivo, a former Monroe-Woodbury superintendent and current chief operating officer for Orange-Ulster BOCES, to screen the applications. He's recommended the board interview four candidates to head Orange County's second-largest school district. School board President Michael DiGeronimo said he expects the board to approve a new superintendent at its February meeting.
