Monroe, NY of Orange County didn't start life as "Monroe."  In fact, it was first sliced from Cornwall in 1799 and was given the name of Chesekook (Cheesecock).  I'm glad the name was changed since I'd really rather not put Cheesecock, NY as my return address. After its start in 1799, the name was changed again in 1801 to Southfield, and then again in 1808 to Monroe (being named after the then-future president, James Monroe).  In 1864 the town of Monroe was divided into three towns; Monroe, Highlands and Southfields.  All three exist today with Southfields as a very small hamlet north of Tuxedo Park, NY. and Highlands as the home to the West Point Academy. The area was home to abundant forests and lime, as well as many minerals including iron, quartz, mica and feldspar, which were a natur...

Everyone knows (or can guess) that the Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan to, uh, ummm, Brooklyn!   It's become synonymous with gullibility ("If you believe that, I can sell you the Brooklyn Bridge!").   It's been included in many movies including "I Am Legend", "Once Upon a Time in America," "Godzilla" and more. But did you also know the Brooklyn Bridge was really located in Monroe, NY, which is located about 60 miles from the "other" Brooklyn Bridge? So here's the story.  As I discussed in a previous blog, http://actvra.in/j2n, Monroe, NY was home to several cheese companies, one that produced Liederkanz, and one that invented and produced Velveeta (prior to being bought by Kraft).    Many of the workers lived in boarding houses or homes that were located on what is now park land.  Th...

2016: For information on the 2016 event, click here.- - - - - - - - - - - - - -Thanks to Julius Wettstein!!!In 1873, Julius started a cheese factory in Monroe, NY.  The factory produced German, French and Swiss cheeses and Julius was very successful.  However, his wife became ill and he packed up the family and sold his factory, training the new owners before he joined his family in Germany.  The new owners, Messrs. Gross & Co., purchased the rights to the cheese, which was known at that time as "Fromage de Brie."  These owners operated the company and then sold it a mere 6 years later in 1884.  The new owners, Adolphe Tode and Ferninand Wolfe received, in addition to the buildings and previous trademark, the new trademarks which also included "neuchatel" and "d'Isigny". In 1888, a chee...

"So, what would you like to do on your birthday?", I was asked. The first thing I wanted to do is take an early morning hike in the Harriman, NY trail system and find a good spot in the woods for the coffee and bagels we would bring, so that's how I answered. Easier said than done!  There are several places we wanted to visit in Monroe's Harriman park system, but after trying each of them, found that Hurricane Irene had resulted in the typical places being closed to traffic.  So we decided to try one last place, Indian Hill.  Indian Hill is part of Sterling Forest State Park and is located via a small sign off Orange Turnpike.  The road going up to the parking area is a one-lane dirt road, and it is fairly bumpy and rocky at the moment.  But the road was not closed and we were successfu...

Drats, I missed the garbage pickup again!  After years of living in a co-op, where I would bring my garbage and recycling to a "garbage house' and the town would pick it up at some mysterious time, I am now in a house.  Which means I need to pay attention to what gets picked up on which days. So, I did a little research and thought I would share the official schedules for the Towns of Monroe, Tuxedo, Chester and the Villages of Harriman and Monroe.  The official sites are listed on the bottom for more information and contact numbers. MONROE (Town & Village), and HARRIMAN (Village) Monday (Village): Regular household garbage pickup. Tuesday (Town):  Regular household garbage pickup. Wednesday: Recylables.  Bins can be picked up from the Town Highway Garage at 87 Mine Road.  The Recycling...

As I'm relatively new to Monroe NY, I've been learning all about the area, and I thought it would be useful to share some of my insights as I get them.  I've already written a few Monroe related blogs (see links at bottom), but this time I'm focusing on the centerpiece of Monroe. The central gathering place in Monroe, NY is the area that includes the Goose Ponds and the streets that surround it.  The Goose Ponds are where the free summer music concerts occur (up in the North end of the park).  In addition, the annual Monroe Cheese Festival also happens here.  Further, there is a jogging path that winds its way about 1.6 miles around the two ponds.  On any warm day you will find people walking or running around the ponds, or sunbathing on the grass.  In addition, the dog walkers are out ...

This week I was invited to a special VIP presentation they were having at Museum Village.  They have been having them all summer to let people know about the big changes taking place in this wonderful place of history.  Museum Village is traditionally a place that runs only a certain number of months a year during the warmer weather and catered more to the schools than the actual surrounding communities.  Starting this year Museum Village will now be open year round, will have craft classes and workshops that can be attended by anyone and you will be able to book birthday parties or business events on site.  They are currently working to winterize certain buildings so they can be used year round.  They are cataloging their inventory and have over 22,000 artifacts on record.   The buildi...

I spent an hour or so this morning rowing around on a custom built Adirondack Guide boat (warning - shameless plug!!!!  One of my husband's passions is making boats). We brought the boat to Round Lake in Monroe, NY.  The new factoid I learned about Monroe this week was that Round Lake is a beautiful, peaceful spot of tranquility.   Motor boats are not allowed on the lake; only rowboats, kayaks, canoes and other non-gas powered boats.  There is an island in the middle of the lake, providing a lot of additional shoreline to explore. The surface of the water was sooooo smooth, but in a few spots, we saw "cats paws" dancing across the water.  These are the small waves that are seen when a bit of wind ripples the top of the water. We watched turtles slide off downed logs into the lake.  We s...

I recently moved to the beautiful town of Monroe, NY in Orange County.  I have been here an entire week, and I thought it would be fun to share my impressions. So far, I've learned that: 1) The Department of Motor Vehicles can provide a vastly different experience in different locations!!  I had to visit the Orange County DMV in Goshen, NY.  What an extremely positive improvement from the area I came from!!!  First, let me describe my previous experience.  There were 2 different DMV locations I could utilize in my old area. I tried them both and the experience was similar.  You would enter the DMV, and wait on the first line.  This is the line to provide you with a letter/number ticket which would be what would identify you for the rest of your trip.  This first line could take anywhere...

As mentioned in my blog post last month, http://actvra.in/gnV (One Month to Name Change and Counting!), Kathleen Moriarty (that's me) has been replaced by Kat Palmiotti (that's me too!).  I'm still the dedicated, interested real estate agent I've been, but have just changed the name I answer to. For those of you who missed the original notice, I married on July 30th, and am in the process of officially changing my name.  I've also moved from the Dobbs Ferry, NY area in Westchester County NY to Monroe, NY in Orange County, NY. In related news, we had a wonderful vacation in Belize, Central America, and that vacation brought all sorts of new ideas for non real-estate (and real-estate) related blogs, so as I get time over the next week or two, I'll be sharing information on a wonderfully d...

Now that June has ended and results are in, it's time to see how the real estate market is doing in Monroe, NY (Orange County).  The first graphic compares 2nd quarter 2011 to 2nd quarter 2010.  A quick assessment of the above indicates selling prices have remained relatively constant in Monroe over the last year, and houses are taking just about as long to sell.  However, the above also indicates sales in 2Q11 were lower than a year ago, which could suggest a weaker market.  It's important to keep in mind that 2nd quarter of 2010 was artificially inflated because it also included tax stimulus closings, so the above is not an apples to apples comparison. Therefore, it's also important to view a month to month comparison of recent data as follows. What's evident is that the last three mo...

By Claudia Jacobs For the Times Herald-Record Published: 2:00 AM - 02/06/11 Goodness, what a spate of rough weather we've had here in the Hudson Valley lately! But of course, I missed some of it because I was in Nevada. I'm happy to report I brought back more than bronchitis from the Real Estate Staging Association conference in Las Vegas. No, I didn't hit the jackpot in the casino, but it is official! I am truly honored to share the news of winning RESA's 2011 Staging Professional of the Year award for the Northeast region. It is a huge accomplishment to be recognized by my industry peers and judges, and I have to thank you, my readers, too, for your encouragement. The always engaging and entertaining Matthew Finlason of HGTV's "The Stagers" was our closing keynote speaker. His present...

Now don't get me wrong. I loved the ad. Very stylish, and as grand entrances go, premiering on the night of the Golden Globes shows.... style. But then, you realize the style the ad guys are looking back at with such nostalgia and urging the public to rediscover was lost in part because of... oh, yeah, THE AUTO INDUSTRY BAIL-OUT.  So if you good folks over on the Chrysler Board would be interested in helping me rediscover my inner style, feel free to send me a snazzy convertible as a thank you for my part in keeping you in your Lear jets.    And you're welcome.
