We already showed you how we are keeping heat or cold out of the basement on the inside and outside of the foundation walls.  The floor of the basement is the final dimension to be insulated.  First the radiant barrier is installed on the ground. On top of that we lay  3 inches of reclaimed foam insulation (R15). Finally we pour  4 to 5 inches of cement which actually makes up the floor.  Another tight seal to make sure the heating and cooling requirements of this home are kept to a minimum.

It creates a great barrier for wind and moisture which allows better humidity control. It efficiently insulates around electrical outlets and plumbing pipes. It deters termites and other unwanted creatures. Polyurethane foam inhibits mold because it doesn't absorb water, adds structural strength and adds very little weight to ceiling and roof areas. The video shows the installation of the foam and shaving the foam getting ready for the sheetrock installation this weekend.

This home will be tight from the outside in. Before the siding is installed a layer of insulation with an R5 value is placed beneath it. This will be a very tight envelope and will squeeze the energy consumption down to the bare minimum.  See the video

  Construction on the Green Home in Jericho's East Birchwood section proceeds as planned.  This foundation is not only strong. It is greened.  Reclaimed rigid foam insulation is attached to the entire foundation.  Reclaimed means the materials are being reused from previous constructions.  This is the first step in sealing the home. Before the solar panels and geothermal system get working, it is important to make sure the home needs as little energy to heat and cool as possible. Our next post - special framing techniques.
